I just got back from Irene's where I saw The Immortal Lee County Killers play a fabulous set ... concluding with an a capella rendition of Bob Dylan's Don't Cry Babe, It's All Right by Toku Chanel (the drummer formerly known as J.R. Token). Their new organ player, The Rev. John Wesley Mars, really adds a new dimension to the group's sound.
The show actually began with an unannounced appearance by The Almighty Do Me A Favour - a.k.a. Dave Bradley - who played a brief one-man-band set (and later worked the ILCK's light show). The Double Pumpers played a dozen songs, then added their cover of the traditional On The Road Again (via Canned Heat) at the request of the Killers.
In other news, the Birdman Sound gang have arranged to bring The Bloody Hollies to town in late September (while I'm away in Nelson, B.C. ... grrr!), The Dirtbombs will scuff up the place Oct. 1 and the Bellrays will return later in that same month. Not Birdman related but certainly worthy of note, venerable British punks New Model Army will play Babylon Sept. 27.
