High fidelity

I headed over to Pressed last week to check out Sackville's Partner. The group features Lucy Niles and Josée Caron from the much-lauded Killer Haze. Also on the bill local acts The Yips and BB Cream, which includes Alanna from the late, great Gaycation. Here she is now!

Bass action with Jon!

Kurt hits!

More Jon!

Alanna sings!

Extra Kurt!

Exuberant action!

The middle slot was filled by The Yips. It seems like too long since I saw them at Ottawa Explosion; though I've seen various members on stage in Casa Lagarto and Warp Lines, such as Kurt, at right with Zach.

Kerri sings!

Jon hits!

Extra Zach!

Extra Kerri!

Jon frets!

More Kurt!

More Jon!

Hair-tossing action!

Partner put on a fantastic set. They're usually described as a punk band, but they put me more in mind of early college rock breakthrough outfits like Liz Phair and Weezer. They've got witty lyrics and a super guitar sound. Here's occasional Mouthbreather Lucy Niles!

And here's Josée!

There were some electrical issues, so Lucy and Josee were sharing one microphone.

I'm not sure who the duo have grabbed to back them on tour, but here they are!

Happy drumming action!

A shouty bit!

More guitar!

More guitar!

The crowd goes wild!

Lucy sings!

They definitely deserve all the praise they're receiving.

OXW 2013: Thursday, Part II

After my break for Tav Falco & The Unapproachable Panther Burns, it was back to Club SAW just in tome to catch the last song from Mother's Children, Nobody's Business.

Then it was on to Moncton's Mouthbreathers, who livened up their set with an Eric's Trip cover.

The real craziness began when Le Kid et Les Marinellis hit the stage. There was much spilling and spewing of liquids, microphone stand molestation, and general audience misbehaviour.

Things got a little carried away ...

After a bit of stage cleanup, it was time for California power pop sensation Mike Krol to play. Krol made a name for himself in the world of graphic design, but now it's music all the time, with some ace sounds, not unlike a lo-fi Weezer.

He's also playing at the pool party gig this afternoon, just minutes away!

Calgary's Mandates finished things off with some loud fast rules style punk rock, culminating in The Dead Boys' All This And More.

They'll be at Vertigo for the in-store performance this evening.

 Much more mania to come!
