Peaks and Valleys

There were a few good show on Friday night, but I trotted over to the House of Targ to ctch the debut performance of Bonnie Doon, a typically swell set from Voicemail and the first Ottawa appearance of Valley Boys, a band featuring a Brutal Knight, a School Jerk and a Vapid.

First up, Bonnie Doon, an all-woman group with a penchant for post-punk. They have two bass players who switch off on vocal duties. The guitar player also sang a tune, which meant two basses going at once; I liked that part quite a bit. Covered: The Misfits' Hollywood Babylon.

Next up, Voicemail. They appeared here recently playing with Peach Kelli Pop, and soon shall again opening for Deniz Tek of Radio Birdman fame, May 18 at the Dominion. They're keeping busy!

Valley Boys finished things off with a killer set. You've seen a couple of these folks on the blog before: Matt Hitch with School Jerks and Chattering Class and Jon Sharron with Brutal Knights. Bassist Jimmy Vapid hails from his namesake band. Of drummer Kalle Malloy I know nothing.

The big dump

Back when I started doing National Capital Rock, I was using a Pentax Super ME. With 36 shots on a roll of 800 ISO film it wasn't that hard to slap up the handful of workable photos along with my usual witless banter.

Nowadays I'm using a Nikon D90 (my Olympus is kept in reserve), and as many a snapper will attest the tendency to shoot vast number of photos means I end up with loads that never see the light of day. More to the point, I'm still using the same old creaky computer I was in 2005 and it doesn't shift ye olde files around as fast as I'd like. Thus, I've upgraded my Flickr account to pro and have begun downloading photos there en masse. I've already slapped up a big selection from the Gaga Weekend shows at Babylon, Yogi's Meatlocker, 854 Bronson and the Atomic Rooster. If things go according to plan they'll soon be joined by a vast outpouring of Bluesfest snaps. Hooray. Speaking of the Gaga Weekend, here's the last few photos from Yogi's Meatlocker, a performance by Toronto's School Jerks. I'm still not sure which ones are Luke, Ben, Matt and Ivan, so once again here's a bunch of photos ...

As you can see, the crowd was starting to thin out as people drifted off to dinner and to steal themselves for the evening's entertainment at Babylon. It was still big enough to mosh about though. After almost being shoved into the glass door of the Meatlocker's second practice space I decided to head home myself. My gear needed some serious recharging, anyway. As for The School Jerks, they're in Montreal tonight playing Friendship Cove - a U.S. tour also looms.

Lost weekend

The last day of the Gaga Weekend was the biggest: A full afternoon of sets from Ottawa's top bands, plus some folks from Toronto and Sudbury, followed by an evening of pure rock mania. So I slapped on the old suntan lotion and headed over to the intersection of Greenfield and Main. Then I discovered the bands were playing inside. I arrived to late for the first few acts; my apologies to Year Zero, Fucked Corpse and Germ Attak, but after the previous night I was not able to get out of bed before noon, and I had a few chores around the house that had to be done. I also missed most of The Fucking Machines' set, and only caught the last five minutes, or about six songs. Since I was late, most of my shots are actually of the back of Emmanuel Sayer's head. Emmanuel wins festival prize for most indefatigable sing-alonger, by the way.

The I toodled over to the "main stage" ... or perhaps that should be the main part of the room ... to see hot teen trio The Girlfriends perform. I'm glad to say this time it was all musical enjoyment and no bashing-on-the-knee with guitars. Yay! The triplets of trash also wore their best dresses for the occasion. Nigel and Wolfgang did, anyway - Sammie wore something that looked like a Halloween wizard's head, or perhaps the mascot for Gentle Giant. By the time of this picture, Sammie and Wolfgang had mostly stripped off.

The small stage doubles as a practice space for several city bands. It's small and it gets pretty hot if you back 30 people into it. It doesn't help if the band in question is The Centretown Cripplers, since not only do they bounce around a bit there's also seven of them. I don't think I took my camera off the widest angle setting once during the set.

The Centretown Cripplers, Yogi's Meatlocker, June 13, 2009

Off course, there wasn't just music on offer. There was also barbecue. Since I suffer from a peculiar affliction which causes me to pack for a small mountaineering expedition for short trips down the block, I was already prepped for food, drink and pitons. J.P. Sadek manned the barbecue, that's Meatlocker mainman Yogi at right (for those few who have just gotten acquainted with National Capital Rock and don't already know them both).

J.P. Sadek and Yogi, Yogi's Meatlocker, June 13, 2009

There was also merch ... and the Ottawa Gaga compilation, which had arrived the previous night. They sold so fast by the end of the day they were just selling the records since they'd run out of handmade covers.

The Zebrassieres jumped on the main stage next; in addition to Andrew and Daniel from The Beach Blankets, Sarah Ford of The Misclits and Jordy of The Creeps churn out some catchy organ garage pop.

The next set was my favourite of the afternoon. The Balconies are Ottawa's next big indie rock sensation. If someone ever brings Blonde Redhead to town or Girls Against Boys to town, this is the trio you want to fill the local opening slot. At the risk of hexing them, I'd say they're the local band most likely to hit it big beyond Ottawa's borders as more than a cult sensation. They're sharp musicians and excellent live performers. I hear an album is in the works, and I for one plan to grab it at first opportunity.

The Felines dug out the leopard print for their set, which unfortunately seems to be the last. I guess the folks involved all have other projects on the go, and Molly is off to Toronto. So if anyone's interested, there's now space on the Ottawa scene for an all-girl trash-surf quartet. Be warned they're big heels and sneakers to fill.

The Felines, Yogi's Meatlocker, June 13, 2009

The Joliettes were yet another band I was unfamiliar with. They come from Sudbury (and have only played a trio of shows there). They've got a pair of folk harmonizing frontwoman, a hot lickin' guitarist and a punk rock drummer, Statues frontman Rob. They do sound super-sweet, and news of an upcoming Gaga records single is most welcome.

The Joliettes, Yogi's Meatlocker, June 13, 2009

The White Wires probably had the best-attended show of the day; Allie Hanlon returned to the drum kit while Million Dollar Marxist Luke and Gagaman Ian rounded out the trio.

The White Wires, Yogi's Meatlocker, June 13, 2009

As you can see they filled out the Meatlocker's main space quite nicely.

The White Wires, Yogi's Meatlocker, June 13, 2009

As you can no doubt tell, the bands alternated between the big room and the practice space; I had looked at an earlier version of the schedule and had noted The Botched Suicides were performing in the small space ... did I really want to be in the small room with Ottawa's most infamous band?!? I'm a fan so what the hell - I have nothing to lose but my life. Unfortunately a lot of other folks passed, and only about a dozen folks dared to witness The Suicides' blistering set.

Botched Suicides, Yogi's Meatlocker, June 13, 2009

The Suppositories really kicked out the jagged postpunk to perfection. The addition of a fourth member has really added some heft. Here Ian glares ... he also did most of the sound at the Meatlocker, along with Justin Considerate.

The Suppositories, Yogi's Meatlocker, June 13, 2009

I better include a picture of Ilona since she also played guitar for The Felines. "She's so serious," I heard one Gaga attendee say. You can see Germa Attak's Jo lending Jeff his guitar at the back.

The Suppositories, Yogi's Meatlocker, June 13, 2009

Next up were The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol. I've started referring to them as MW))) so I'll just stick with that. Here's a band for folks who like The Heads, Acid Mothers Temple's raga tunes, The Mike Gunn and the drugged-out fringes of post-rock.

MW))), Yogi's Meatlocker, June 13, 2009

The School Jerks from Toronto finished things off with another set of Brutal Knightly hardcore. Rough and straightforward like the kids like. The audience had dwindled a bit by the time they hit the stage, but what the crowd lacked in numbers it made up for in slammability.

The School Jerks, Yogi's Meatlocker, June 13, 2009

Then I went home - I needed to recuperate, as did my camera battery.

After school special

The School Jerks came up from Toronto to dish out some mush-mouthed hardcore, a la Pagans crossbred with The Brutal Knights. The quartet is made up of Luke, Ben, Matt and Ivan, but I'm not sure who does what so here's a bunch of photos.

Feedback action!

And one last singer photo.

They have a show coming up at Toronto's Rancho Relaxo on February 7.

Wired for sound

Last night I watched a fine Hong Kong crime movie, Mad Detective (it's about a detective who's quite, quite mad) then went over to The New Bayou for the record release show for The White Wires. They're a much-talked about local trio, as everybody who reads this blog knows. Now that I think about it, most of the regular Ottawa readers of this blog have already seen them live - they're one of those bands I keep managing to miss. Onward!

The opening act was to have been The Fifth Fist, but they couldn't make it, so the slot went to The Visitors who played a set up of pop punk that made me think of a cranked up Muffs, particularly when Antarctic-Cat da Gama handled the singing. Drummer Kevo Polo can also be seen in The Annoyers, while guitarist Skottie has made numerous NCR appearances fronting The Creeps. They threw out a couple of new tunes as well.

The Visitors, The New Bayou, November 29, 2008

In between sets, DJ Nate (Hurlow, that is, also of deceased or irregular combos The Dead City Rebels, Fortunate Sons, Golden Famile and Rickity Ship) spun some punk rock and rock'n'roll tuneage.

DJ Nate, The New Bayou, November 29, 2008

The School Jerks came up from Toronto to play their first Ottawa show. Nasty sneering hardcore that's like The Brutal Knights, but without the goofball humour. That's not a criticism - they had a real edge.

School Jerks, The New Bayou, November 29, 2008

Finally The White Wires played a triumphant set. As mentioned earlier, Allie from The Felines (and The Misclits and Captain Foxy, come to that) drums. Sedatives organist, sometimes Cryptomaniac and Gaga Records supremo Ian Manhire fronts the band and Million Dollar Marxist Luke Nuclear plays bass. So alot of familiar faces turning out the power-pop-punk.

White Wires, The New Bayou, November 29, 2008

It was an energetic evening that ended up with the audience dancing on the stage and running off with Ian's hair.
