We're taking another leap, this time over Kingdom Shore's Pressed performance, so I only took three photos and there's scarcely any point in publishing another. Instead we're off to the Dominion Tavern, November 9, 2013, for a show with a bunch of people with new records to sell. First up to the plate are Peace. The Vancouver post-punk combo had just released The World Is Too Much With Us.

Just a few days ago I posted that Pregnancy Scares would be performing at the Dominion Tavern Nov. 9. Well, the night arrived! So off I went to one of Ottawa's few remaining taverns (hopefully not getting more scarce by the day in the Elmdale's case) to see them Scares along with Asile and Peace, two excellent bands I've seen and enjoyed before.

First, Peace. The Vancouverites are touring the land behind their new Suicide Squeeze release, The World Is Too Much With Us. Last time I saw them was at Capital Rehearsal Studios in April 2011, along with Crosss. I'd heard them accurately described as Mark E. Smith meets The Modern Lovers. This time around I thought singer Daniel Geddes was a ringer for Edwyn Collins.

Vancouver's Peace are a band it's impossible not to like ... because after all, you have to be a total bastard to walk around saying "I hate Peace!" Also in its favour are the declamatory post punk the band has honed to a sharp point. Despite a recent interview with White Lung's Mish Way where they claimed to "only play bad shows," this one was quite good.

Good practice

For a while now Capital Rehearsal Studios has dwelled beneath a bank St. building that also houses a bunch of Department of Foreign Affairs offices; operator Luke Nuclear has shot videas for White Wires and Peach Kelli Pop there, and many bands that have appeared on the blog use it as a practice space. It also turns out to be an adequate venue for bands looking to book a last-minute show - just what Vancouver's Peace and Halifax/Montreal trio Crosss were looking for last night.

Crosss like fuzz and pedal tones. It's a raw, lo-fi garage sound with a heady buzz.

Peace have been described as Mark E. Smith meets The Modern Lovers, and unlike most such crossbreed comparisons, it's actually quite apt. Fortunately the band is blessed with the right vocalist and rhythm section to pull it off.
