Ready to rhumba

The unexpected chaser on the Jam for Japan was provided by flamenco guitarist Doug Towle, who had flown in just that day for a show the following night at Cafe Umi, and who decided to log a little extra stage time.

Doug bends! I believe he's actually eyeballing his looping pedal, which he uses to fill out his sound.

Well you get the idea.

He's now back out west, playing three days in Edmonton at the Butterdome Spring Craft Sale, as well as a Saturday gig at Jeffery's Cafe.
  • Show reminder: KO, Daniel Wesley and Rebel Emergency roll into Capital Music Hall; Reversing Falls, Ornaments and Topanga are at Zaphod Beeblebrox; There's more Kelpitude, this time at the Dom Polski with The Acorn performing The Pink Ghosts,  Recoilers playing 2 Years End and Andy Swan just plain playin'. Nick Johnson and Lindsay Ferguson perform the Rainbow; Bloodshot Bill releases his new album, accompanied by Yukon rockabillies Sasquatch Prom Date.

The king and them

The rock section of the Jam for Japan was rounded off by Wise, Young & King. They've made more than a few appearances in my show reminders but this was the first I'd been able to see the classic rock-loving quartet.

First we have Myles Bell and Alan Charlton, the group's two guitarists.

Alan sometimes drops the guitar; bassist Chris Terkuc Colin Wolfson and drummer Alex Scott round out the band.

Static Revolt and Deadzone are at the Avant-Garde. Last but not least, the Kelp Weekend kicks off with a performance at Kichessippi Brewery by Jim Bryson with Matt Essoudry's Mash Potato Mashers and Flecton Big Sky.

Ain't it a shame

Alright, we're back after a post-election day off. Up next in the "rock" half of the set was Lefty McRighty and The Shameless Bastards. Frontman Greg Harris was also getting kudos for organizing this shindig - he also handles the O-Town Hoedown, so he's just an organized guy.

On the right, "Standup" Steve Donnelly, who can also be seen in The Kingmakers.

A whole new drug

The Polymorphines have been busy of late, recording in Austin, Texas with Tim Kerr of Big Boys etc. fame, pressing up EPs, getting T-shirts and plotting their next swagger across the sttage of greasy garage rock. They took a break from all that hectic activity to kick off the rock section of the Jam For Japan.

But first, more thrilling raffle action with Tara and Brady!

And now, onto the rock! With bassist Nicholas Apocalypse!
