Let's twist

Toronto fuzz brigade Twist paid a visit to Ottawa on Wednesday, teaming up with Winnipeg's Yes We Mystic and Ottawa's Trees for a fine set of art rock and fizzing pop. Trees were on first. They started off as an instrumental trio. With the addition of vocalist Jon they've moved into Jeff Buckley and Radiohead territory. Here's Jon!

Bass action with Andrew!

Percussive action with Alex!

Deciduous action!

More guitar with Andrew's brother Alex!

Alex gets in some bass time.

Yes We Mystic came on after an extensive soundcheck for some sophisticated and melodramatic music.

Cello action with Jodi!

Violin action with Eric!

Synthesizer action with Jodi!

Keegan sings!

Jordon hits!

Extra Adam!

Mandolin action!

Extra Eric and Jordon!

Twist played a super set; I get the impression main brain Laura has a few Jesus and Mary Chain records in her collection. Soundwise I think the band also sounds a bit like a less-baked Mac DeMarco. Here's Laura!

Keyboard action with Patrick!

Matthew in motion!

Percussive action!

Laura sings!

Extra Patrick!

Twisted action!

More guitar!

More drums!

A super-fun evening.

The young and the twisted

Things seem to be warming up again on the music scene; I headed over to Pressed last week to see a Debaser-promoted show featuring Locals trails and tourmates Twist and So Young. Allie was on stage and like her set opening for Michael Swann at Raw Sugar back in July put on a knockout show.

Allie sings!

Closeup action!

London's So Young play some fuzzy indie rock that's in the same orbit as Best Coast and Dum Dum Girls. A very solid set despite some wonky pedal issues. Here's frontwoman Paterson Hodgson!

Drummer Dave Lunman hits!

Adam Gilkes plays some guitar!

Pedal-stepping action!

Laurie McColeman handles the low end.

The shouty bit!

Extra Dave!

Singalong action!

The view from the other side of the room.

Twist is fronted by Laura Hermiston of Toronto's BB Guns and produces some more of that grungy and fuzzy pop, with perhaps a bit more of a dreamy feel than So Young.

I'm not sure who's in the band beside Laura, but here's the chap on drums to start with.

Guitar action!

Laura sings!

More guitar!

Rhythm section action!

Backing vocal action!

Drum pad action!

More Laura!

And so on!

Even more guitar!

A great show for a packed house.
