In the dark

As March turned to April and winter changed to more winter, I headed over to Pressed to check out Forgotten In The Woods Again and Le Pelican Noir, two bands I haven't had the privilege of hearing before, and Obsidian Will, whose first show at the Daily Grind I saw way back in December 2014. First up FITWA. Here's keyboardist Adriana and bassist Greg!

Unfortunately for photography, drummer Mike was stuck in the corner behind some of Le Pelican Noir's gear.

Nocturnal krautrock fans Le Pelican Noir were on next. Here's a very grainy Maxime! (The lights were down low for a projection.)

Things weren't much brighter for Obsidian Will. Since I saw them they've expanded into a trio. Here's Liam!

Oh the brutality

At the end of March, before my encounter with the cold from hell, I headed over to Mavericks for some ultraheavy sounds. I confess I bought my ticket for this Primitive Man headlining show under the impression I was going to see Early Man (I'm familiar with both bands, but since I've seen Early Man twice before at Mavericks my brain made the incorrect connection on autopilot). First band up were lcoals Hunter, Gatherer. Here's guitarist Garrett and bassist Nick!

Denver's Spectral Voice put a bit of thought into their stage presentation, but it ended up so dark and smokey you'll have to be mostly content with pre-set photos.

Age of machines

Ottawa hardcore greats The Fucking Machines have decided to swing back into action; they played a reunion show at House of Targ March 24, and have another date at the Dom planned for May. They had a trio of fab punk bands opening for them starting with the new-but-experienced Wire Cuffs; you saw a bunch of these folks popping up at the last Punk Rock Covers night post. Here's Brendan (also of Slim and Popular) on vocals and Callum on drums!

Last time I saw Fucking Machines was at Mavericks during the 2011 edition of Ottawa Explosion. Their members have kept varying degrees of busy in other bands since then. Scott has travelled through a few bands, most recently Coastal Pigs, which played Targ just a couple of days prior to this set. David Jackson has been doing some solo experimental stuff and working with Improvising Musicians of Ottawa-Outaouais, Johnny Nash has been playing with Neck (and others), Dave has dome time with Black Tower, and so on. On to the show, starting with Scott!
