Beat trash

They Shoot Horses, Don't They? is a Vancouver band with, depending on when you ask, five, nine, or seven members. Some people say their music is circus like. It's certainly up-beat, ebullient, and just the sort of thing to swing from a trapeze to. The band looks a bit nutty, and like to bring a sack of random stuff on stage to thump at strategic points in their performance. Their two-step ramshackle rhythms and tooting brass made me think a bit of the Reverend Glasseye without the gothic schtick.

Nut Brown is the ringleader of this crew.

Robb on bass, Ryan on alto sax ... does Ryan look familiar to you? If you've been following this blog, you might recall him sans beard from when his solo project Collapsing Opposites played at Irene's.

Julia on drums.

Trombonist Pietro.

Keyboardist Chris-ariffic is a smiley guy - much smilier than this photo suggests.

I'd better run this side view so you can see baritone saxophonist Shane.

Hairy and scary!

And now some oompa action!

Pietro beats on some of his collected stuff. No doubt his knee-pad came in handy.

Chris-ariffic is gonna getcha, keyboard!

Another really energetic set to end a very fine night of music.
