Popularity contest

Kids, don't be hatin' on The Populars. I guess some people think they're a bit cheesy, maybe too smart aleck for their own good, but the Edmonton-to-Prescott transplants put on a good show on Superbowl Sunday, with their funky power-trio rock meets Duran Duran sound (they also rushed for 36 yards). This was the first in a succession of Sunday gigs at Zaphod's in February, and it was a good start.

For some reason vocalist Dave Klym's singing reminded me of Men at Work's Colin Hay (this is the sort of horrible thing your mind can come up with when your musical tastes were formed by Top 40 radio in the 1980s).

Drummer Ernie Basiliadis, upon whose drum kit the proud flag of The Populars' very own country is emblazoned.

Meck Myers (Meck?) gets his sweat on - really, somebody hand the guy a towel ...

Popular action! (And in mega-size.)

Yelling into your pickups is fun!

More Popularity!

And more? What the heck, why not.

Sparse attendance, but there was a big football game on and winter was making a comeback. As I said, they'll be appearing this Sunday (this time with Aide De Camp, which features Corey Bowles from Trailer Park Boys)
