The sound of speed

Okay, the post's title is a little specious - as far as I know Ottawa's Tweak name has nothing to do with meth (or with The Jesus and Mary Chain); actually they're a fairly mid-tempo bunch. Not to be confused with the south African or Japanese combos of the same name, the local quartet play alt rock with a melodic and funky edge. They're quite tight musically and on record highlight singer Jason Sultan-Khan's tensile vocals. As a lover of gutbucket rock slop I can't say I'll be rushing out the door to be catching their next show, whenever that is. But I will grant they don't come out of a cookie cutter, their lyrics are good and they have skills aplenty.

Sultan-Khan rocks the microphone.

Guitarist Frank Beecher works on his downstroke.

The funky drummer, Christian Emery.

Bassist Eric Ramsden.

Alternative rock action!

They have a seven-song EP available.
  • Show reminder: Neil Young lovers Magnolia Electric Co., Pittsburgh nicotine rappers Grand Buffet and local country rockers Greenfield Main play Barrymore's. Two Minute Miracles fans might want to check out Raised by Swans and The Soiree at Zaphod's since there are a few Miracles among the Swans.
  • Good cause alert: Shop in the sun as punkottawa.com holds what it calls its first annual flea market. Records, handicrafts, foodstuffs, odds'n'ends, doo-dads, thingamajigs and possibly a feeblevetzer or two. Runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sweet woo alert: Tricky Woo will be returning to the Dominion Tavern Oct. 22.
