Metal Monday

Usually when there's music at Zaphod Beeblebrox on a Monday, it's a free showcase for up and coming bands or touring combos looking for a fill-in night. Not yesterday, though. New York black metal theorists Liturgy have a new album to peddle and are on tour with PC Worship. Opening were local quartet Klovenhoofs.

The foursome is of course familiar from such other bands as Garaga, Fucking Machines, Mother's Children, Camp Radio ... actually I could real off half a dozen bands just for Davey Quesnelle alone, so let's just say this one lets the guys really let their metal flag fly.

... although that's usually always the case with Shawn Jam Hill.

I had only heard PC Worship's name before, and really enjoyed their shoegaze-to-the-max sound. I suspect thy would make a killer double bill with a band like Red Mass.

I also like the fact that they appear to have designed and constructed some of their own instruments.

Finally Liturgy kicked out some frenzied metal for the two-dozen or so folks who made the trip out to see the widely lauded and reviled band. Apparently some black metal folk don't like their dispensing with some of the genre's tropes, or their tendency to talk about it. Oh well, I still thought it was pretty terrific.

They played a fine set despite some technical difficulties ... "Everything was working so well before we came to Ottawa!"

They play Quebec City tonight and the Pop Montreal fest Wednesday.
