The next big thing

This year marked independent radio titan CKCU's 35th anniversary. There were plenty of shows around town commemorating the event, including a shindig at the Rainbow corralled together by the folks who host Crossing Boredom every Thursday starting at 7 p.m. They managed to get a bunch of bands up from Toronto, including Sons of Otis who have never been up this way (barring a very early appearance by their precursor band Otis). The first bunch on stage were Gypsy Chief Goliath. GCG is comprised of a collection of scene veterans from such bands as Georgian Skull and Mr. Bones. Their taste seems to run to the classic side of things - they list bands like Thin Lizzy and Black Sabbath - garnished with some growlier vocals.

We can start the headbanging right here with bassist John Kendrick and guitarist Chris Coleiro.

Here's guitarist No. 2 Dana Ljubanovich, harp man Brodie Stevenson and singer Al The Yeti Bones.

Fisheye action! This is about the only one that worked out, apart from the one I used the day after.

They're coming back to town for a show with Muffler Crunch and Holy Divide January 14 at Mavericks.
