White wedding

I was considering cracking a joke about a cover of Billy Idol's White Wedding being covered at last night's prenuptial bash for Devin Tomaney and Chris Cook at the Montgomery Legion Hall. I guess it would have been mildly prescient, since the tune was in fact hauled out and massacred ... but that's getting ahead of things. Chris is in a couple of closely allied bands, The Allrights and The Centretown Cripplers, and Devin is a Crippler as well. Thus, it makes perfect sense to have both bands play a gig before the two get hitched (Devin and Chris, that is ... there are no group weddings planned). Local powerpop sensations The White Wires also showed up to finish things off.

The Allrights kicked off the night. Dave Tough returned to sing a few songs, and Dave Banoub's brother Daniel, right, made his entree. In addition to The Replacements' Left of the Dial - a band regular - they covered the late Jim Carroll's People Who Died and Cub's New York City.

Off to the right, Chris, Jon and Mel.

The Cripplers played next - here's soon to be wedded Devin and Chris.

Mel percusses ... like Chris and Dave Banoub she's in both bands.

John Sproull from Chris's old band Run Stop Restore was there, and added some vocals to a cover of that band's New Wage.

As their set came to an end drum duties were handed off to Ilona of The Suppositories and White Wire Allie.

Yes, I was having more fun with my new flash synchro cord. Here are Evil Luke and Creepy Jordy.

Once again The White Wires wowed; they played so long I had to beat it before they finished. They started things with The Clash's White (Wires) Riot and yes, Idol's eternal White Wedding.

The crowd was much more energized then this photo makes them appear.

A swell time was had by all.
  • Show reminder: Corporation, Machine Gun Dolly, The Dirty 30s, The Toughtones and Saucy Jack rock Cafe Dekcuf; Staggered Crossing and Staging Blame are at Mavericks; The County Boys and The Chaffey Brothers perform at Irene's; the Elmdale House hosts a CD release show for Ball and Chain and The Wreckers. The Revolting Cocks are at Babylon. There's yet another house show at 443 Kent, and once again The Girlfriends are playing - this time they'll be joined by Rottaway, Orange Pulp and The Mistress.
