Hip Priestess

Priestess are a heavy rock band from Montreal - their primary influence would seem to be Sabbath, but they don't stop there so it's pointless naming names: They just play it loud and hard and slapped some fairly melodic singing from mainman Mikey Heppner on top. And they had a drum solo on their see-through kit. I overheard some boneheads griping that "They suck!" but I thought they were pretty good. Damn 13 was the opening act, but they had already been on and off before I arrived at 10 p.m.

Here's Heppner, bassist Mike Dyball and drummer Vince Nudo.

A few seconds later ...

And the whole band ... you can just make out guitarist Dan Watchorn at left. He also sang a song, and did a good job of it too.

Dyball rocks on.

The Capital was jam packed, which is why the first three pictures look so similar (right down to the guy/girl with curly red hair at the bottom ...).
  • Show reminder: Hugh Dillon of Headstones and Hard Core Logo fame has a new band - the Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir - and a new album out in June. It's a good one, too. Not so long ago z'Howndz rocked Irene's with Mono Hum - now you can see them rock Zaphod's with Golden Famile!
  • Breaking News: The Setbacks set aside their busy job as advice columnists to once again destroy Ottawa's clubs with rock. They play Zaphod's May 13 with The Creeps and Montreal's Sexhead; they give Eugene Haslam until June 18 to rebuild before they return to destroy it once again. Steven Dall, who you may recall from a few posts back, brings his pajamas to Zaphod's May 19 (once again with The Department of Foreign Affairs); Trevor Alguire and Tom Thompson will open that shindig.
  • Less Breaking News: The Stumblers play both kinds of music at the Aloha Room May 18. Nick Danger will be endangering the Aloha May 11.
  • Dreadlocked News: Ari-Up (formerly of The Slits) and her True Warriors are playing Zaphod's July 5.

Thank you Andrew - right you are! This band will be huge. I was looking forward to seeing Death From Above 1979 at the Horseshoe in Toronto on July 30, but couldn't get past the first band - Priestess. They had the line up in reverse order that night. Too bad so many people missed them. Can't wait for their new release and another show near Toronto. Amazing - Heppner's the best.
