Goodbye and hello

CKCU listeners may have heard of Debaser, the Tuesday afternoon show (2 to 3 p.m.) dedicated to alternative rock. Host Rocky LaLune had been planning a sojourn to Europe, and had locals Swollen Eyes and Toronto outfits Auras and SPECTRE on hand for a sendoff gig at Mugshots. Although Rocky's travel plans didn't come together, there was a fine display of garage and psychedelica.

Swollen Eyes started things with a somewhat ramshackle set.

There was also some pants removal.

SPECTRE gave off a bit of a Television vibe, entirely because the singer sounded like Tom Verlaine to my ears, and perhaps some Love as well.

Headbanging action!

Then it was time for Auras. I hear they like The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and I can certainly hear that. First, Rocky says thanks.

It's all about the semihollows. There was plenty of jangle.

More guitar!

A mighty fine performance.
