March of the robots

There was much weeping and gnashing of teeth on the local music scene when Raw Sugar called it a day; it had been a popular venue for many small shows, and I've been there a couple of dozen times since first seeing The Banditas play a show with Hot Damn! in January 2010. The space has had a sharp-looking renovation and is now home to Bar Robo and fortunately the new owners seem as keen on having musical acts perform there - in fact I'd say the stage and lighting is a bit of an upgrade from Raw Sugar's. My first outing to the redesigned and renamed space was for a couple of touring Edmontonians, Wares and Marlaena Moore, and local Trails. Ali is certainly keeping busy - she has a show this Wednesday at Black Squirrel Books with Lovecraft and Bad Channels.

Wares is the pseudonym of Cassia J. Hardy, a very raucous and raw performer who should probably be performing to a bunch of youngsters jumping about instead of the sit-down crowd for this show. She brought her own light show.

Marlaena Moore and her drummer Andrew finished the evening off with some pleasant folk-pop.
