Dial M for Murder

I finished off a busy week at the House of Targ. Timiskaming rockers Mustapio have a new album, Mustapio's Magical Murder Music, and were celebrating its release on a bill with Cervidea and The Tenenbaums. I confess I hadn't heard of any of either Mustapio or Cervidea and was only vaguely aware of The Tenenbaums, but after checking out MMMM online I figured I should truck on over and check things out. First up were Cervidea, a Monteal band which uses some fairly wild bass-playing and processed vocals - they're the kind of band I'd expect to hear on Mike Patton's Ipecac label. Here's vocalist Marc-Antoine Lemiuex.

The Tenenbaums brought a lot of their fans to the show; frontman Sheehan Jordan is back from a stint up north, they have a sophomore LP We'll Always Have Milhouse out in October (release show at the Avant-Garde Bar Oct. 23), and have some raspy-voiced punk for you.

A fun set, but a good chunk of the audience left afterward, leaving Mustapio frontman Darrell McBride to joke that the House of Targ should invite them back so they could play second some day. Darrell and his previous band, Friendly Fire, were frequent visitors to the city a few years back (I mentioned imminent shows by them several times, back when I was still doing that), but are yet another entry on the long lit of folks I meant to see but never got around to. Mustapio continues Friendly Fires' concern with First Nations issues, and wraps it all up in a heavy grunge influenced sound. Think of all those "Seattle sound" outfits that kept a foot in heavy metal, such as Tad and Alice In Chains and you'll hit close to the mark. Here's Darrell coming to grips with his microphone.
