Hanging on the telephone

On Saturday I went over to the House of Targ to see local punkers and hotly tipped Telephone Explosion recording artists Cellphone. Chloroform kicked things off with their d-beat meets The Wipers sound. The first time I heard them, I thought they were cool straight up thrashy punk; nowadays they make me think of Afflicted Man.

The folks in Cellphone do include a synth player among their ranks, and from advance billing I was expecting something along the lines of Zebrassieres or The Epoxies, but the band has a more rama-lama sound. They noted they didn't get a lot of opportunities to play with punk bands before plunging into their set ... I can see them appealing to fans of, say, Motorpsycho.
