Sleepyheads

Wednesday night I made the trip downtown to check out some desert rock legends at Cafe DeKcuf. Yawning Man helped spark the generator party scene that gave birth to such legends as Kyuss, and they're regularly cited by such scene heavyweights as Brant Bjork as inspirations. They shared the bill with Opium Winter (who I missed because I'm a slowpoke), Texans We Are The Asteroid and locals Monobrow, who delivered their usual heavy goodness. Here's some rhythm section action with Bryan and Sam!

Guitar action with Paul!

More Sam!

Bonus Brian!

Bendy action!

Even more Brian!

Dimpled action!

We Are The Asteroid played a fantastic set of burnout Texas psych. Here's bassist Nathan!

Drummer and BSA enthusiast Frank on drums!

Guitar action with Gary!

Back-to-back action!

This tour by Yawning Man was to feature original bassist (and Fatso Jetson founder) Mario Lalli. Unfortunately Mario got stopped at the border, so guitarist Gary Arce and drummer Bill Stinson pulled in Nathan stepped on bass to  treat the crowd to some out of sight jams.

Yawning action!

Manly action!

The whole lot!

Bonus Bill!

Extra Gary!

A super evening.

Switched on September

The House of Targ has been having a synthetic September - with two editions of Switched On Synths to entertain the elecronica-loving masses. The second (a "Robot Dance Party edition) fell last Saturday, with sets from Andre et Michele, Law Factor, Violence and Steve Summers. Andre et Michele got things rolling. Here's Andre!

Last time I saw them there was some guitar, but for this set they stuck to the electronics.

As seen from the other side ...

Fisheyed action!

Things got a little darker with Montreal's Low Factor, both musically and photographically. Her minimalist cold wave really hit the spot!

Keyboard action!

Smokey action!

Things got even darker and smokier during Violence's set. Here's Eric and Julie!

Gripping action!

Julie sings!

Steve Summers wrapping thinsg up nicely.

House action!

And that's it!

That'll do, pig

Coastal Pigs have a new album out, Becomes a scene, becomes the nothing (available on the Internet), and celebrated its release on Thursday with a gig at House of Targ. They were joined by The Jerry Gross Organization (who I arrived too late to see) and Expanda Fuzz. Here's Leila and Chris kicking things off!

Shady action!

Bass action with Chris!

Leila sings!

Singalong action!

Chris sings!

On to Coastal Pigs, who played a sharp set. Here's Leigh, also of World War 4, Hamn, Street Meat and sundry others!

Jeff (of Werbo and Mystic Zealots) sings!

More Jeff!

Extra Leigh!

Bass action with Scott!

Bearded action!

The whole lot!

Bendy action!

A fine show.
