Rise to the occasion

Happy Easter all. Should you find some time between religious and/or egg-concealing duties, consider booking over to Mavericks to see twitchy new wavers The D'Urbervilles. I've seen them on stages large and small, and since they're going to be sharing this one with Lioness, Suppositories and New Teeth, I dare say this show will be a good one.

D'Urbervilles, Bluesfest, July 7, 2008

If you prefer something a little more Celtic around your religious holidays, The Mahones will be living it up at Zaphod Beeblebrox along with Cellartones.

The Mahones, Babylon, June 2, 2007

Meanwhile, over at Babylon there's a sold out show of assorted punkers Bring Me The Horizon, Straight Reads The Line and The Sleeping on the early shift and assorted dancefloor shakers Thunderheist and Winter Gloves on the late shift; I can certainly attest to the live prowess of the latter. Elsewhere, The Balconies, Dinosaur Bones and The Urban Aesthetics dish it out at Cafe Dekcuf; Harvey Cartel are at the Rainbow; The Polytones, The Lovely Killbots and B'Mo Crazy play Irene's; The Devillaires and Huntley Slim and The Suburban Cowboys are at the Elmdale House.

The other half

Famed Irish band The Pogues were once called Pogue Mahone, which means something rude in Gaelic. The Pogues ditched the later half of their name, leaving Dublin lad Finny McConnell to pick it up, dust it off and dub his own band of Irish-punk-folk troublemakers with it. They like The Pogues (of course!) as well as punk rockers both of the 1960s and '70s variety (that's a Clash sticker on Finny's Ric).

Finny - founder, mainstay, chairman of the board, etc.

Ayron Mortley on mandolin. He later switched to guitar (the white hollowbody to the right of Finny is his), but I didn't stick around for that bit.

Arlyn Bradley on bass.

Drummer Nikos.

Sean on harp (of the non-Irish variety) and banjo.

The whole lot!

Laughs all 'round chez Mahones.

They had a special guest for the singalong action (on The Pogues' Dirty old Town), Jack from the Trews. I have to take their word for it, since I know naught of them Trews.

Faceoff action!

As I said in my earlier post, they were about to crank things up with some dual-guitar action. Unlike my previous note, the band is not in Australia. That trip got delayed.
  • Show reminder: Mouthus, Cousins of Reggae, B'Italian and Smoke Judo make strange noises in the basement of End Hits; Clepto and Radiodazed play the Dominion Tavern; didn't I tell you Pride Tiger would come back through town? Once again they bring the boogie to Zaphod's with Die Mannequin and The Mighty Eagle Band. Brendan Flynn and The Terrible Liars and Eric Vieweg and The Silver Lining play Babylon. And of course, there's Westfest, with Big Stone Drummers and Alden Pompana, The Old Youth, Graveyard Dogs, Hunter Valentine, Andy Swan, Nukariik, Golden Dogs, Angela Desveaux, Jason Collett, Lily Frost, Lindsay Ferguson and Kathleen Edwards.

Waiting game

I went to Babylon expecting things to get off to a late start - no point in getting things underway before the Senators and Ducks were done sparring. Even after the Sens won, the crowd didn't exactly pick up; perhaps everyone was off getting hammered on Elgin St. Anyway, a few dozen folks enjoyed rousing sets from Good2Go and The Mahones.

Good2Go got things underway with a run through Link Wray's Rumble.

The Mahones - they're off to Australia in a few days.

Things looked like they were about to get a bit louder as I left with a switch from mandolin to guitar; unfortunately I work today and had to split. I'll just complete my Mahones listening experience next time.
