Crying time

I like my country music old school. For a long time my music collection's country section went from Johnny Cash to Hank Williams, with no stops in between. Nowadays there's a lot more variety, helped along by more modern performers, including Daniel Romano. Best known for Attack In Black, he's produced a trio of fine country albums in the past three years, starting with Workin' For The Music Man; his Mavericks show in November was right around the time of his release of Come Cry With Me

The cat in the hat.

Under water

If you thought there weren't enough Ian Kehoe photos in my Baby Eagle writeup yesterday, worry not: In addition to being a Proud Mother (and member of Attack In Black), Kehoe is also frontman for Marine Dreams, the evening's headliner.

The man himself!

Marine Dreams at Pressed

Kehoe has a revolving door band, but apart from Nick Ferrio - the man just can't stay off the stage! - we have Ross Miller on bass.

Fledgling effort

Back to Pressed for more grainy photos! After Nick Ferrio's fine country set, it was the turn of Baby Eagle - a.k.a. Steve Lambke of The Constantines - and The Proud Mothers. This meant that Ferrio didn't get much time off stage, since he plays bass in the Mothers. Will Kidman (also once of The Constantines) and Woolly Leaves fame also plays in the band. On this occasion the band was rounded out by Attack In Black man Ian Kehoe on drums.

Going country

There was a lot of good stuff to go and see on Friday night, but one can't be everywhere at once, so I traipsed through the biting cold to Mavericks to see Daniel Romano. I've enjoyed his work with Attack In Black, but have really been knocked out be his recent country albums; his Working For The Music Man was one of my favourites of 2010.

Opening was Brandon Allan, (aka Brandon Walsh) last seen on the blog playing guitar with Amalgamation.

He had three other folks with him, including a banjo player.

It's been a while since I've seen Rey Sabatin Jr. on stage Once upon a time I saw The John Henrys on a regular basis. Then Rey split for T.O. and I didn't see them again until a CD release show at Mavericks in April 2010. Now here he is again, trying his hand at the solo thing, and sounding pretty good.

He was accompanied by musician-about-town Matt Ouimet on guitar and lap steel, but not drums (apparently he forgot his snare, if you trust the stage banter).

Finally, Daniel Romano played a knockout set, accompanied by a trio named The Trilliums, including his brother Ian on drums. He's dressing fancy these days and sporting a bigger hat.

There was some fine steel accompaniment courtesy of Aaron Goldstein, who's also in Lee Harvey Osmond.

All in it together

Once upon a time Ottawa was blessed with small clubs like Bumpers and The Hi-Fi (formerly Lucky Ron's). Alas, both those places are long gone. Fortunately, some chic new eateries - most notably Raw Sugar - seem to to be steeping into the gap. There's also The Daily Grind, The Avant-Garde (granted, not new at all), and Pressed, the Gladstone Ave. gourmet sandwich joint. It's actually an ideal place, since there's no nearby homes to complain about the noise and inside it's got a nice clear view of what passes for a stage from just about everywhere in the room. Mind you, it's a little dim (get ready for some grainy photos, in other words). Still, I can see why Kelp supremo Jon Bartlett has taken a liking to it, and why the folks in Nick Ferrio & His Feelings, Marine Dreams and Baby Eagle & The Proud Mothers seemed to be enjoying themselves so much last night.

First up, Peterborough's Nick Ferrio - that's him on the left. He performs in a folk and country style, and favoured the crowd with a reverse murder ballad and the tale of Mary Beth Harshbarger - the woman who shot her husband because she though he was a bear (you may have heard of her acquittal for criminal negligence in March 2012).

Nick Ferrio & His Feelings at Pressed

Although Ferrio usually has a lot of Feelings with him, on this occasion he only had a vocalist and bassist to accompany him.

Nick Ferrio & His Feelings at Pressed

I'd say he was followed by Baby Eagle & The Proud Mothers, but since he's a Mother himself - playing the bass - I'm not sure that's accurate. Baby Eagle is Steve Lambke, formerly of The Constantines; he had ex-Constantine Will Kidman (a.k.a. Wooly Leaves, you may remember his set with Julie Doiron at Mavericks a while back) on guitar and Attack In Blacker Ian Kehoe to play drums.

Will was getting some ace sounds out of his guitar.

And if you're wondering where the Ian Kehoe photos are, look no further since he steps out from behind the drums as mainman for headliners Marine Dreams. Like BE&TPM, they seem to draw a heavy influence from scrappy 1990s indie rock.

Bass player Ross was quite enthused by Ottawa's active Thursday night life (or maybe he was just teasing us ... I suspect the latter).

Repeated Attacks

I seem to seeing a lot of Attack In Black lately. They visited in late October, then came back in early February for a show with One Hundred Dollars. I find myself liking their roots rock more each time.

I took a few fisheye photos as they started their set, and didn't like any of them.

Walking distance

It's nice to live in a city where a bunch of the clubs are in close proximity - you can go to Zaphod's to check out a few bands there, then head of to somewhere like Mavericks and Cafe DeKcuf and catch their later shows. That's just what I did last night. Lauchie Headrick of Jokers Wild asked me to check them out and snap some photos, and since I liked the classic rock sound on their Myspace I did just that.

You didn't need the very capable cover of Led Zeppelin's Dazed And Confused to tell these guys like their heavy duty riffing. Loads of wah and some hefty drumming, plus some quite supple bbass woprk make for a good listen.

I wasn't as keen on Pressure Makes Diamonds, though the band did have two-dozen pals to belly up to the stage, so that's probably just my taste in music. They do the throaty punk rock thing with a double kick drum - I heard something about a Protest the Hero cover in their (I don't know enough about the band to ID whatever they did play as a finale). Some bass problems and a mid-set pee break by the singer did cut down on the momentum a bit, but at least one of their pals jumped on stage for some interpretive dacing.

Dallas Waldo is a rapper, making this one of the more peculiar triple bills I've seen. His backing comes from a wee MP3 player. I thought he sounded okay, but I was hankering to pop off to Mavericks and see One Hundred Dollars.

I've seen some of One Hundred Dollars before - the drummer, bassist and keyboardist come out of Jon-Rae and The River -  but the creative key are Simone Fornow and Ian Russell. They do real-deal country on record. Live they're a somewhat noisier affair as pedal steel guitarist Stew Crookes uses a Gibson SG and volume pedal and isn't afraid to get some strange sounds out of his setup. I'm listening to their 2007 album Forest of Tears, and let's just say they were closer to Tirade of a Shitty Mom than the more acoustic stuff on it. It was a really great set and I'm now sincerely regretting not checking them out earlier (despite advice to the contrary from several corners).

As for Attack In Black, I posted about their last Mavericks set just a few days ago (man, that backlog) and once again they put on a super set. They also had some bass problems. "I've always felt bass shouldn't use effects" opined Daniel Romano after tossing the offending fuzz pedal aside.

Attack in Black at Mavericks

They called things to a close relatively early since they were feeling a bit bagged - believe me, I know the feeling ... zzzzzz.

They'll be back in black

I can't help but thinking Attack In Black should be a punk rock band, but the brothers Romano and their co-conspirators take a lot more from Neil Young. They drew a big, loyal crowd for this show. I get the impression thy like to keep busy, since they're already headed back this way.

A be-hatted Dan Romano.
