Round and round

Saturday was the first Voice of the People night of 2017, so I popped over to House of Targ to see what was happening in the world of skanking. Montreal's K-Man and The 45s were headlining, with Taco Bandits filling out the opening slot (and are playing with The Obsidians at Bar Robo on Feb. 9). Here's some waving action with Pablo!

K-Man and The 45s are a lively lot from Montreal ho add a heavy dose of rock'n'roll to their ska; they played a bevy of Ramones songs (one of their albums is a selection of Ramones covers) in addition to their originals. Here's the K-Man himself, along with drummer Brian and bassist Frankie!

Positive vibrations

I headed over to the House of Targ for another helping of Voice of the People a week ago to check out Israel's Skarate Kid. I was interested to hear how they incorporate Middle Eastern themes into the ska sound. To tell the truth, I didn't hear that much outside the usual ska-roots-reggae, but it was still an entertaining set. Here's some saxophone action with Eli!

Raise your voice

As you may have noriced, I get out to the House of Targ with some frequency. That said, one of the few events I hadn't been to was their monthly ska/reggae/rocksteady/roots rock night, Voice of the People. The event was started by local ska combo The Sentries, and usually gets in guest bands. For the May edition Montreal's Sweaty Palms came down to help get the groove going. The Sentries started thir own set off with a ska-ified take on the 007 theme song. They have a new EP out, The Horseman, and played a bunch of tunes off that as well. And now some finger-snapping action with Julian (who performed earlier that same night with T.O. soul combo Slack Bridges at Zaphod's) and trombonist Nick!
