Twang and bang

A couple of weeks back I headed down to House of Targ for a quadruple shot of roots-rocking action, with local units Dumb and Homely, Chris Landry & The Seasick Mommas and Hundred Pacer opening for Detroit's Craig Brown Band. D&H were already rocking away when I headed down the staircase. Here's Sev and T.J.!

On to Chris Landry & The Seasick Mommas; Chris had a pretty full crew for this show, no doubt in prepartion for the big old tour they're currently on out east. Here's Chris and Stuart (also of Train Jumpers, Dusty Drifters and L. Poushinsky's band).

On the other side, Jim from The Ven Dreddies and a much-obscured K.J.

Hundred Pacer were up next with a tasty set that leaned more in the direction of 1980s rock - they've really embraced that Echo & The Bunnymen sound. Here's Rey and Chris!

This isn't Craig Brown's first visit to Ottawa - he was here on October 2009, playing guitar with The Terrible Twos at Atomic Rooster. He's done a lot of rock stuff, but in his eponymous outfit he's gone roots rock in the style of The Replacements and Rank and File. Here's Craig and drummer Jeff!

Leaving here

Saturday I took a trip to the House of Targ for some punk rocking action, and to catch the last hurrah of a few bands, at least in their current form. Erstwhile headliners Slumlord have a new cassette out, and are also wishing farewell to drummer Tasha, who is heading west with Tim, the bassist from Alcohol Fueled. Also on hand: New post punk outfit Life AD (also saying goodbye to Tasha), British spike'n'studs combo Rotten (UK) and Chloroform, playing a rare show. Here's Life AD. This was the first time I've seen them perform (it might well have been their debut), and they were really excellent. They have a suitably intense frontman in Andy.

Rotten (UK) played a short set. The Rochester-based quartet had a bit of misfortune at the border and were down a singer, so guitarist Matt Sex handled the vocals.
