War on XXXmas

Yes, it's Christmas Show time, with the Season's Beating crowd living it up at Irene's, Kalle Mattson and co. performing at Zaphod's and various members of the Fun Boy Club House crowd (that is, members of New Swears, Tropical Dripps, Glorious Moonrockets and Shitty Mike) slipping into their red woolens for a stage-crowding performance as XXXmas, the band that turns Santa into Satan.

Look everyone, gifts!

National fun day

This Canada Day I popped over to Plymouth Street. In a fit of unexpected responsibility the wild and crazy folks of the Fun Boy Club House got themselves a permit to take their partying to the streets. There was much skateboarding, boxing, beer-shotgunning and roof-dancing ...

As I arrived Bobby Wilkie was just wrapping up his set with some vigorous acoustic stuff.

Back in the driveway, some more special guests, all the way from next door ... The Special Guests!

I think Sammy is officially king of the crowd-surfers.

Marxist Cowboy & The Hand That Feeds played an absolutely killer set; this is one band I wish I'd seen before now.

While they played there was some rooftop dancing ...

And also some rooftop pylon-tossing.

I caught Big Moan at the Daily Grind back in January, opening for Crabe. Here they are again, rocking out with their ultra-heavy blues sound.

That was all I had time for, unfortunately; I had to head home and do some stuff before running downtown to catch the fireworks, then head off to Gabba Hey.

Join the club

I've been to packed shows before, but for shear sardine-can quality I don't think I can beat my debut appearance at the Fun Boy Club House. The popular house-show venue  is Ottawa's premier Manse of Misrule, occupied as it is by various members of New Swears and their partners in debauchery. Friday night's show marked the conjunction of two events. The first was Allie Hanlon's brief return to Ottawa (she now lives in California) as her band Peach Kelli Pop is on trans-continental tour. The second was a reunion of The Girlfriends, progenitor of The New Swears and others. First time I saw the girlfriends, Wolfgang cracked me on the knee while swinging his guitar around. Last time was at Ritual in 2010 for the last Gaga Weekend. They were supposed to have a tape out for the show (this the reunion) but they didn't arrive in time. Maybe they'll have a second reunion show? I think this is the place!

And once again I'm going to skip on followup posts, so check out what's what after the jump ...
