And good riddance

I wrapped up my 2016 show-going at House of Targ with the always excellent Metalian headline a bill with Flying Fortress and Droid, who started things off with some thrashy sounds. Droid have been quiet on the shows front as they prep their debut long-player. That's done, so I expect a return visit in the not-too distant future. Here's bassist Michael!

Metalian played two sets, the first of their own stuff, then one of covers (which started too late for me to stick around for). They're one of the best live metal acts around, and as usual, they sounded great. Here's Ian!

Many moods of metal

In a shocking twist, Saturday night I did not go over to the House of Targ. Instead I wandered down Gladstone to No. 612, current residence of Thomas of Mudplots and Spilt Guts fame. Like his neighbours at No. 614 (a.k.a. Yips House, at least for the purpose of the blog), he hosts the occasional show, and this weekend it was metal night - punk metal, old school metal, space metal and Mordor metal, that is! To put it another way, a bunch of Toronto-area folks braved the wild weekend weather and made their way to Bytown.

First up, Brampton's Wesley Crusher. There's a fair amount of member sharing among the bands, with Droid drummer Seb filling in, bassist Inti also fronting Manacle and Jacon reprising his guitar role with Droid. Thus, everybody but singer Gerry was pulling double duty that evening.

On to Manacle, who sit somewhere in the line between NWOBHM and L.A. thrash to my ears. Here's freshly acquired guitarist Phil, drummer Matt and frontman Inti.

The hooded forces of local Tolkein-loving metallurgists Barrow Wight concluded the evening.
