The ruff and the ready

My plan last night was to go to either the House of Targ or Gabba Hey, but my Friday schooling ended up stretching past the 14-hour mark. By the time I was home, fed and watered it was too late to head out. Back to the backlog we go, with a show then in progress - that is, Black Mastiff at Cafe DeKcuf, following on the heels of No SInner.

Here's guitar-man Bobby Yiannkoulias and drummer Allan Harding.

On the other side of the stage, frizzy-froed bassist Clay Shea.

Downward dog

Back we go to March 21 and Cafe Dekcuf. Canadian usic Week was still going on in Toronto, which always means a few bands trekking north to Ottawa and Montreal in an attempt to spread the travel expenses around. This time around it was West Coasters No Sinner and Edmonton's Black Mastiff. Collider finished the night off, and local thrashers Descendant got things started.

Guitar action with Mat Brinkworth!

Have metal, will travel

A couple more CMW-bound bands were in town last night, and with a couple of local metal acts ready to rumble on the Cafe DeKcuf stage, why not field a four-act bill?

Kicking things off were Descendant. I've seen their CD around town, but haven't had a chance to check them out before now. They shred things pretty mightily, and played a hot set. Here's guitarmen Mat Brinkworth and Raf Russell rubbing shoulders.

The odd ones out for this show were No Sinner. Yes they're loud and all, but in a more blues-rocking vein, with a bit of a Stooges thing going on as well. They've shared stages with The Pack A.D. Next time they come through town they should really try to swing a show with Muffler Crunch. They had a bit too much excitement en route when they rolled their van. Fortunately the contents, human and gear, were largely unharmed. Here's singer Colleen Rennison.

On to Black Mastiff! They played to a small crowd at Mavericks a couple of years ago. They still have that cool sludgy QOTSA sound.

However, they left their pointy things behind this time. "Logistics" explained bassist Clay Shea.

Finally a superheavy set from Collider, a local band who really should play a lot more.
