Repeat as necessary

Boyhood has just released a new album Bad Mantras, and main brain Caylie got a chance to play some tunes from it (along with older stuff) for a packed crowd at Black Squirrel Books on Aug. 10. Caylie was joined by brother Callum and Philippe from Scattered Clouds. She'll be back in town Nov. 2 for a set at the NAC.

Top to bottom

I took another trip to House of Targ last week, to catch sets by Peaks, Vile Bodies and Bike Thiefs. Peaks were already going when I walked in, and seem like an energetic bunch. Here's singer Nick!

I enjoyed The Vile Bodies ramshackle rock'n'roll action when I caught them playing with The Mad Ones, Rebelle and Nightshades last year at Targ; they make the think of Memphis combos like The Reigning Sound. Here's some singalong guitar action with Mike and Elliott!

Bike Thiefs come out of Toronto with some deadpan vocals and Cop Shoot Cop buzz - they're a bit McKlusky-like, I'd say. Here's frontman Marko making a very important point!

Show me the money

Seasons come and go, but community radio fundraising never really stops - or maybe it just seems that way to me, since I go to a lot of shows in support of Ottawa's two excellent stations, CHUO and CKCU (not to neglect CKDJ, but I can't recall seeing any fundraisers for them). Friday night at Pressed it was CHUO's turn (co-presented by the Debaser crew), with sets from Grime Kings and Brazilian Money for a pretty packed house. Here's Jimmy and Callum.

Brazilian Money formed in Edmonton, and like many a band has since moved on to Montreal. Grime Kings was an ideal opening act for them, since they feature a similar amount of guitar tangle, with the Money men accentuating their sound with a pair of percussionists rocking the traditional kit as well as a standup set.
