It'll end in tears

I got the impression from early show promotion for Dirty Beaches' Mavericks gig that Xiu Xiu was supposed to be the headliner, but by the time the show actually happened Jamie Stewart and Angela Seo were holding down the middle slot. I got the impression that the effort behind nightly emotional catharsis had done a number on Stewart's throat, but who knows.

Angela rocks the grim T.

Stranger and stranger

I wandered over to Mavericks last night to watch a lineup that was a little off the beaten path. I listen to a fair amount of peculiar music, so Xiu Xiu, Father Murphy and Dirty Beaches aren't doing anything likely to baffle me (particularly since I own work by all three, and have seen Xiu Xiu before anyway), but they still qualify as something a bit different.

First up, Father Murphy, an Italian trio who apparently played their set without a break (I arrived too late to catch the beginning). Their music splits the difference between oddball (and perhaps tongue-in-cheek) and avant-garde. I saw some giggling in the crowd, and also a lot of rapt attention. Actually, I'd say the crowd was the most attentive I've seen in recent memory for all three acts.

Then came Xiu Xiu, who I believe were supposed to headline. Mainman Jamie Stewart was gargling something from a couple of cups, making me wonder if something was up with his throat to stop him from playing a fuller set. As usual the music was fraught with the weight of trauma, emotional torture and physical deformity.

At least he cheered things up at the end with a cover of Suicide's Frankie Teardrop.

Dirty Beaches rounded things off with a short set that seemed a bit laid-back - then again, most stuff would after Xiu Xiu. I find Alex Zhang Hungtai's reverbed crossbreed of kosmiche rhythms and 50s rock styles entertaining, though it seems so closely targeted at what I like I may be a bit inured to the combination.

Pretty cool stuff anyway.

Some things

Another week begins ... well, not really, but if you remember what you were doing yesterday you probably weren't doing it right (or are a working teetotaler like me). But tonight you can head over to Babylon and catch the return appearance of Xiu Xiu (whose latest album is creeping me out right now), Thao Nguyen and Fucked Corpse.

Alternately, there's Aggressor and Karnax at the Bytown Tavern.
Wednesday, the always entertaining Two-Minute Miracles pass through Mavericks, along with Share and Gianna Lauren. Upstairs at Cafe DeKcuf there's The Heartland, One Strong, Set Fire To Wicker Park, Dead Winter and Case of Asthenia. Over at Zaphod's there's Finger of Knowledge, Symphony in the Stairwell and Agwanti.
On Thursday, Glenn Nuotio and The Habit perform at Cafe DeKcuf.

Xiu's next

Finally it was time for those happy-go-lucky characters in Xiu Xiu. I had not heard much about them. Their music is rhythmically complex and emotionally tortured. They played a Joy Division cover (Ceremony) that I didn't recognize at the time - their style is quite distinct (or maybe my brain was just on one of its temporary vacations).

Ringleader Jamie Stewart.

Caralee McElroy and the ever-popular harmonium.

Ches Smith - them drumsticks is good eatin'.

The whole lot!

An undeniably swell show, with lots of excited chatter from the crowd afterward.

Extra! Extra!

Mocking Music's Capital Idea Festival continues; I missed the last three days but was off work for Xiu Xiu's show. Locals Fucked Corpse were to open things up, but Rhode Island quintet Get Him Eat Him landed on the bill at the last moment - not a big leap since there on tour promoting their new album Arms Down and just so happen to be on the Absolutely Kosher label - home of Garneau and Xiu Xiu.

Get Him Eat Him - they rock it like pop punk with an indie edge. They also covered Elvis Costello's Hand In Hand. A great bonus on an already swell bill.

Ottawa's own Fucked Corpse. Unfortunately illness and ill luck has stripped away a few members and blighted the rest with communicable diseases and fractured body bits so they had a couple of ringers on stage tonight to bump their membership up to seven.

Next up, Chris Garneau. A winsome lad who plays piano tunes, he didn't quite win me over even though he sounds a bit like Sufjan Stevens.

Finally Xiu Xiu. I'd never heard them before. They're truly a band you wouldn't mistake for anyone else. I found myself thinking of Scott Walker circa Tilt through most of their set. A really exciting live act with a highly distinct approach to percussion.

That was a truly diverse evening of entertainment. Thanks should also go to As The Poets Affirm for their loan of a vibraphone. Capital Idea continues tonight at Barrymore's (not Babylon, as an early version of the post and a longstanding show listing has had it) with The Fiery Furnaces, Thundrah! (not Chinese Stars, who have been forced to cancel their tour) and The Hot Springs.
