Ottawa Explosion: Day 4, Part I

Saturday offered the option of listening to bands for a good 14 hours straight, starting at 1 p.m. in the Clocktower's parking lot with a set from Empty Nesters. That's a bit more than I'm capable of these days, and I didn't make it out of the house until mid-afternoon for a set from Don't Bother, which features a bunch of folks from the Tough Age/Ketamines circle. Here's Paul on the microphone!

The afternoon ended with a set from Pity Me, England's Martha. Yes, there really is a town called Pity Me (more than one, actually), and Martha did come all they way from there to play OXW - they may be the fest's farthest travellers this year. Here's Daniel!

New sounds from way back

Friday night sent me back to the House of Targ for a look at Century Palm, the new outfit formed by the unholy union of The Ketamines and Zebrassieres. You may call the two bands performing at Pressed back in June 2013 on a bill with Chains of Love. Since the two outfits had almost identical personnel, I guess Paul and Andrew decided to rebrand. Opening up was Voicemail, who put a new wave twist on their usual Irish punk-loving selves as a trio.

Bassist Todd was not about, and Ian has gone with the keys.

On to Century Palm, which features a regular lineup of Andrew Payne , Paul Lawton, Alex Hamlyn on sax and guitar and Jesse Locke on drums. Sarah Ford (also of Zebs fame) plays synth in the studio. Here's Alex!
