The skinny

Ultrathin finished off the last Ottawa edition of Bacon Fat on a high note, with a lot of jumping about and scuzzy punk rock.

Ready, set, go!

Message sent

From H. De Heutz things led neatly into J'envoie; keyboardist Olivier Fairv=field barely had to move a step as he was joined by the rest of the experimental Hull quartet.

The whole lot! Olivier, drummer Pat Senecal, guitarist Pierluc Clement and a bassist who is new to me (which isn't hard to be, since I last saw the band play at Irene's in April 2006).

Initial impressions

All good things must come to an end, they say. Bacon Fat, Sylvain Lajoie's monthly night at hostel jail bar Mugshots certainly qualifies as a good thing, but alas Sylvain has left for Montreal so this October offering was its last hurrah in this burg. The beginning of the end started off with H. De Heutz (named, no doubt, for Hubert Aquin's mysterious counterspy), an experimental duo featuring Olivier Fairfield of J'envoie and Fet. Nat. and Nathan Medema of Kingdom Shore, also a J'envoie vet.

Nathan handles the bass.

Yips yup

Second band of the night - and a new one to me - was The Yips. they play a sort of post-punk, provided the punks are Siouxsie & The Banshees. As I mentioned before, they also remind me a bit of Pleasure Forever and The Detroit Cobras. It's a cool-sounding racket, and comes with an energetic live performance.

Guitar action with Jon Schofield and Zach Lebert - I think in that order.

Those Yips! Kerri Carrise handles the vocals, and that's Jon Bennet on drums. They also have a bassist, Kurt Rafuse, but he wasn't around for this set.

The song remains the same

If there's one thing Ottawa is missing right now, it's Bacon Fat. The monthly outing at Mugshots was quite a treat for fans of greasy rock and music under the stars. Apart from the change in the weather, show arranger Sylvain has also decamped for New York. Perhaps some forward-thinking soul will take it over. Hopefully someone who throws Television into their DJ ses like the previous proprietor. Here's a quick snap of Sylvain - taken under the condition I not tell him I was taking his picture - with projection above by Matt Trudel.

Now on to the opening act ... Male Nurse! Davey does get around, doesn't he? And doesn't the brickwork make a nice backdrop?

No doubt he'll be spotted again shortly (wait, did I say that the last time?).

Fet. meets fat

A couple of weeks prior to this Mugshots show, I caught Fet. Nat on Bluesfest's opening, playing before the Melvins and putting on a good show. Thins went just as well at the old jail, and the audience participation was quite a bit better.
