Magical fun

There's often not a whole lot going on in Ottawa on a Tuesday night, so it was pretty cool to get a chance to see a bunch of bands I hadn't seen before perform at The Rainbow. When I walked in Wizard Party were playing some speedy punk rock with appropriately D&D-influenced lyrics. Bassist Alex Loveday, Phil Bennett, Chris Wattie

Sorcerous action!

Shot by both sides

Tuesday night I zipped off to The Rainbow for some punk rock. Four bands were on the bill, and some were luckier than others.

Wizard Party were the first band on the bill and were about half way through their set when I walked in. Musically it's fast-paced punk,  while the lyrics are about Thor, Medua, the Merchant Marine and other mythical beasts, plus such magical stuff as wizard parties, wizard castles and wizard pizza. Here's some rhythm section with their regular bassist and a subsitute drummer.

Things got a bit more hardcore on the final song.

Next up were Celery Troff, who rocked as they had before when I saw them in August; the sound was particularly good for this set, I thought.

They were followed by quartet Lost Youth, who are a crustier lot.

Thank goodness for band patches or these guys would have no pants.

Patron Saint of Plagues had the worst run of technical problems I've ever seen afflict a band. First the band went. After realizing they were spending more time dealing with things malfunctioning than performing, they jumped straight to the last song. Then the guitar and vocals went.At least they're a pretty game bunch. Hopefully I'll see them again when stuff is actually working for them.

Deadboy's bass went dead, so he borrowed Celery Troff's.

Finally, Quebec combo Shot by Jack, a hardcore combo from Hull with a fondness for covers. They were throwing in some ska when my guts started to gripe and I decided to head home.

There was also some guest saxophone in there ...

A fine evening, technical difficulties aside.
