Sweet deal

There was a lot of super music at Bar Robo a week ago. The bill was headlined by Bonnie Doon and included Haligonians Vulva Culture, as well as new acts Protruders and Phern. You may recognize the Protruders as the latest iteration of Joe Charmondy's Kappa Chow, plus bassist Jarrett has played here with Tough Age. Here's some guitar action with Joe!

On to Phern, who got all gussied up for their set of avant-garde minimalist soft-pop. They have a new album out, Cool Coma. Helene from Moss Lime is in the band, along with veterans of sundry other Montreal combos. Here's some Danelectro action with Mike!

Vulva Culture played a lovely set; they seemed a bit more low-key than when I saw them perform at Gabba Hey. Here's Amy, Hannah, Bianca and Kayla!

Under the big top

Arboretum went over to City Hall for this year's outdoor festing, and it was a very nice setup, with a little village for a handful of craftsmen and some independent food vendors, and a pair of tents (one big, one small. I got there in time to see BB Cream start things off on the Debaser Stage. Here's some closeup action with Alanna!

It's been too long since I last saw Teenanger perform, at the 2013 edition of Ottawa Explosion; the merry band of Ottawa expats always put on a hot set, though they're one band I think should always be within arm's reach of the crowd (like their Mugshots show). Here's Jon and Chris!

Sloan was at the festival for a run through of their classic One Chord To Another album on its 20th anniversary. I'm a big Sloan fan, and it looked like I had plenty of company. Unfortunately headliner Metz had to cancel due to family matters, so Sloan also played in their slot. Here's some gripping action with Chris!

There was a brief Sloan-break to catch Fet. Nat. at the Debaser Stage. They had some added signage! A very active crowd beat me to the stage so the photos are a bit rubbish, but you get the idea ....
