Some enchanted evening

Back on Novembr 9 I headed off to House of Targ for some rock'n'roll action. To be rpecise, it was the "Turf" part of Surf & Turf 2019. It all started with some Boom Creek as it usually does). Here's some percussive action with Adam!

Get connected

On to the "turf" part of the Surf & Turf festival. In addition to The Sir John A. Macdonalds, who really seem to be contradicting the whole "only play one show" thing with ever-increasing frequency, there were two out-of-towners: The hard-rocking Lord Almightys from Toronto and New Hampshire ruffians The Connection. Here's Macdonalds' guitarman Chris.

The Lord Almightys are a tough-sounding crew (their stuff sounded much more melodic and jangly on tape) and made a great first impression. Most of this outfit come from Nova Scotia. Here's singer Myles and bassist Gerry.

The Connection made me think of The Undertones and other high-energy pop combos with a 1960s rock fixation. They've been lauded by Steven Van Zandt and Andrew Loog Oldham and have a good line in vocal harmonies as well. Here's mainman Brad Marino and guitarist Geoff Palmer.

Making waves

Another year, another edition of Surf & Turf. I checked out the second half of the two-night helping of surf and garage music last year and was well-entertained. This year I managed to get to both nights, along with a packed house of surf and instrumental fans. The first band on the bill was The Randy Shenanigans; this was my first time seeing them live. Here's bassist Kevin.

The Reverb Syndicate have already appeared on several occasions in National Capital Rock (the last time was their last Surf appearance at Targ in 2014) so I'll just get on with it - here's Mike Sheridan.

Montreal's Men In Gray Suits (not to be confused with Honolulu's Men In Grey Suits) are a surf band boasting a bunch of folks from such combos as Astro Hot and Bloodfeast, among others. They have a sharp, punchy sound; along with classics like Intoxica you also got a reworking of Kraftwerk's Das Model. Here's guitarist Mike Decosse!
