No, it's just begun!

And now, on to the music event of the year ... no, not Bluesfest, Jazzfest, Westfest (already did that), Feverfest (forgot to mention it .... sorry about that, Feverfesters!). No, I speak of course of the squalling scion of Gaga Weekend, Ottawa Explosion! Ian Manhire curated the wonderful Gaga Weekend for three years, and now the torch is being held aloft by Emmanuel Sayer and assorted other helping hands, notably Luke Nuclear. For day No. 1 the folks at Bruised Tongue contributed a showcase and awesome mixtape of their band of fuzzy freaks (stiill downloadable from their site), starting off with Knifemare. Knifemare took a few people off-guard with their chaotic Gaga Weekend set last year (or so I hear); for the Explosion they were back with an expanded band and more denim!

Ryan and Patric (a.k.a. Carruthers!), the OG KM!

I gather future shenanigans are planned. This was also a release show for their new split tape with Mannequin, the band up next which coincidentally also featured Matt Oxley.

Set it off

It's here! Run for your lives! Okay, not really, though you probably shouldn't count on getting an excess of sleep if your going to the heir to the fabulous Gaga Weekend. This year's kickoff show was held at Babylon and featured locals Knifemare, Mannequin, Male Nurse (with band), Holy Cobras and The Visitors, with Montreal's Demon's Claws coming down for a tasty set.

First up, Knifemare, who promised in the Ottawa Explosion guide "no drum machine." Carruthers and Ryan have indeed buttressed their combo with CHUO guy David Aardvark on drums and noted psychonaut Matt Oxley on bass. It made for a bg improvement, though the sight of Carruthers bounding about in denim shorts and vest might not have been best for the faint of heart.

Up next Mannequin, which is yet another Matt Oxley project (he has at least two this festival, with New Human being the other). Anyway, I like all the Oxley I can get since his stuff - Nervous System and Crazy Ocean, for example - is always right up my alley. This was more fuzzy psychedelia with motorik drumming from Andrea Poulin and an unrecognizable Jesse Winchester on bass - this was the first time I've seen him without a stripey shirt.

I've seen Male Nurse Davey Quesnelle perform solo on a few occasions, but this set with Steve Adamyk on bass and Dave Forcier on drums was the first I've seen of the song-a-day man performing with company (barring the zillion other bands he plays in, of course). It was a mighty raucous performance, which finished with what I'm told was a cover of Gob's Soda (I don't know the band well enough to say) that really had the crowd fired up.

He was followed by the always hot Holy Cobras. No need to introduce these guys, as Emmanuel noted. They may be one of the most long-lived bands at the Explosion, now that I think of it.

Demon's Claws really put on a ripping set. For some reason I always thinking of them being more musically chaotic; this time around they had me thinking of Love and, apart from some intrusive bass feedback that drove Ysael to microphone mangling action, sounded really great.

The Visitors are a Rock'n'Roll Pizza Party institution, having played it six or so times, so naturally they finished things off with a rambunctious nine-song set which featured a bunch of new tunes.

Now it's on to Day 2, starting with a quick blitz at Yogi's Meatlocker from The Uncooperatives, Muffler Crunch, Djanguar, Pretty little Death Machine, Monobrow, Groovegasm, Hot Dam and The Ditch (a.k.a. Gilmer Ditch), then a couple of short sharp shocks at Vertigo Records courtesy of Pregnancy Scares and Motivator, then it's off to an upstairs-downstairs affair at Mavericks and Cafe DeKcuf with Bad Sports, Statues, Creeps, Sonic Avenues, Fucking Machines, Fear Of Lipstick, The Kamalas, The Johnnies and The Mnemonics.
  • Show reminder: If the Explosion isn't your thing, then there's always the wonderful One Hundred Dollars and Brandon Agnew at Raw Sugar Cafe; The Matthews Brothers and Lickpenny Loafer are at Zaphod's; FM HI LOW  and Owl Eyes flock to The Rainbow; Brock Zeman performs at Irene's; The Elmdale hosts Bill Toms and John Allaire.

Between the ribs of sleep

Freakout duo Knifemare sprung from the loins of Fucked Corpse.  I'd say in its clattering space-rock assault on the diatonic scale is more in the vein of the earlier band. Of course I have only one show to go on, and I suspect they may never sound the same way twice ...

Carruthers and Ryan rock the frets!

And finally some video. "Who cares? No one saw that!"

They have a couple of shows coming up: One at Random House with Frustrations, J. Graf and Total Crush August 14 and the other at Cafe Umi where they'll be terrifying the hippies alongside The Girlfriends and Reversing Falls August 19.

Lockdown - Part I

My feet ... are tired. My ears ... are ringing. It's been a musical marathon through Day 3 of the Gaga Weekend at the matinee show at Yogi's Meatlocker. There were a few bumps this time around: The Rookers couldn't make it, something happened to fill-in Young Stalin and the bylaw enforcement folks came by after someone grumbled about the noise levels. Those trifles didn't put a damper on an afternoon of many varieties of rock'n'roll.

Thunderuncle started things off with some heavy rock. The covered Torche's The Healer and doom legends Trouble. You'll recognize veterans of such bands as Harshey, Fucking Machines, Elbeejay and Weapons of Mass Seduction.

Rhume played the small room; they were really energetic and their classic rock stuff sounded really good. Jon Bartlett apologized for not attending any other Gaga Weekend events: "I've been partying with my taxes!"

Knifemare were a completely different proposition, powered by a drum machine and featuring two former members of Fucked Corpse - some heavy duty riffing meets dementoid clatter.

After Knifemare, Secret Loves provided another sharp transition, to good-natured garage rock.

Chandeliers are a newish band ... yet another outfit with Davey Quesnelle in it, along with Scott Terry, Dave Jackson from The Fucking Machines (among others) and unfortunately for him John Sproull, just finished playing drums for The Secret Loves. I thought they sounded like Silkworm after way too much coffee.

As at the last Gaga Weekend, The Joliettes came down from Sudbury to provide some lovely harmonies and folk rock (Rob Seaton also performed with Strange Attractor the previous night and with Statues later in the day).

The Rookers were to have played next, but circumstances beyond their control apparently prevented it, so Germ Attak did the punk honours with their 1982-themed attack.

The Centretown Cripplers rocked the small room with a really intense set. Mel was playing drums this go around. She broke a stick but kept on drumming.
