Signal to noise

Summer is headed into its final stretch, and that means festival season is winding down - but at least it's going out with a bang instead of a whimper, with some pretty sharp lineups at of CityFolk and last week's Arboretum. I caught a couple of nights at the Rolf Klausener-curated fest, starting with an evening at St. Alban's, featuring Montreal's Organ Mood, Ottawa's Flying Horses and headlined by Julianna Barwick. St. Alban's was perfect for these acts (sometimes too perfect, when its acoustics made every pin drop behind me audible during the quiet parts). Organ Mood were the first group up. The duo combine music, some instruments of their own design, a lot of audience participation and some overhead projectors. Unfortunately they were also positioned just behind me, where the lighting was so dire the chances of a decent photograph were zero. That said, we'll start things off with Laurie Brown, whose show The Signal co-presented the night.

A very grainy Christophe Lamarche-Ledoux provides the music.

An audience member uses one of the band-designed instruments to add some rhythm. Another audience member used a modified doppler to project the sound of her heartbeat, which was pretty cool.

Next up, Flying Horses provided some instrumental sounds while grainy black-and-white images that (I'm guessing) showed off Iceland's stark landscapes played overhead. Raphael Weinroth-Brown on cello and JF Beauchamp on trumpet.

As you can see, I didn't take all that many photos ....

Birthday boys

If you've been to many of the shows that I've been to, you'll have noticed yet another omnipresent photographer (somewhat more omnipresent than I am these days), Ming Wu. As you can see from his PhotogMusic blog, he gets around. Since he turned 34 on Thursday (along with his twin brother Lenny, also a blogger and snapper), some pals decided to throw him a birthday party at Babylon along with a couple of his favourite bands, Big Dick and Flying Horses to provide some of the soundtrack.

First, the Ming Zone!

Strictly instrumental

Every once in a while I head over to Mercury Lounge to see a show. And by coincidence on the last three occasions the shows have featured chamber metal instrumentalists Musk Ox, who were headlining the show. Here they are now:

Egad, they've lost weight. All kidding aside, a helpful band pal came up with the skull during a sojourn in Nunanvut. Musk Ox (the band) were headlining an all-instrumental lineup, starting with Guelph 12-string virtuoso Michael Mucci. I bought Mucci's first album, Under The Tulip Tree about five years ago and have been hankering to see him live since then. He's played town on several occasions, but the stars never aligned until Friday night.

Up next was Flying Horses, the brainchild of Jade Bergeron, who brought along a gaggle of music boxes and a toy carousel, along with a zither, glockenspiel and an electric piano for some sprightly (and slightly creepy ... I think music boxes are mostly used for horror movie atmosphere these days) set. She was accompanied by Raphael Weinroth-Brown from Musk Ox on cello and Karolyne LaFortune on violin. Here she is setting up.

Then it was Musk Ox's turn mainman Nathanael Larochette was once again accompanied by Weinroth-Brown and violinist Evan Runge. They took on a new challenge for this show, playing a single, one-hour piece all the way through.
