Control issues

There was a bunch of worthy shows to attend on Saturday night, but I decided to skip out on Simply Saucer at the Dom (no doubt a great show) for a couple of hours with some other space-travellers at Pressed. Pachyderm and Room Control came over from Montreal, while locals Clavius Control started things off with some fine Mono and Kinski-styled post-rock.Here's guitarist Neil and bassist Zachary!

Last time I saw Pachyderm was in July 2016, when they played a set at Birdman Sound to celebrate the store's 25th anniversary. Like Room control, they've got a lot of kosmik rock in their DNA. Here's drummer Nico!

Up above

I took an early-evening stroll over to Birdman Sound last week for some anniversary activity. The Glebe institution is celebrating 25 years of draining my wallet (and also selling music to other people). Victoria transplant and former Band Whose Name Is A Symbol/Cold Coffee and Salty Boots/Four'N'Giv'r/Weapons of Mass Seduction/Solid Senders/Trudels member Mark Alexander McIntyre was back in town for a solo set, and Montreal duo Pachyderm also appeared to pay homage. No worries if you missed it - the whole affair was broadcast live on Steve Kirklands 6 p.m. CKCU show and is available on demand.

Shadowy men

At the tale end of November I went to Gabba Hey to check out some kosmik sounds. Flecton Bigsky was cementing his return to the stage, The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol were celebrating of their newly released (and now almost entirely sold out) album Pathfinder, and Montreal's Pachyderm showed up with some krautrockin' tuneage as well.

Flecton kicked things off.

Pachyderm was formed by Tom Jarvis and Nico Braesch after the two met in Montreal (Jarvis hails from Liverpool, Braesch is French). Like TBWNIAS, they've served as sound carriers for Damo Suzuki, and like those German kosmik sounds.
