Of Miss and men

On Friday I popped over to Pressed for a bit of roots rock. On the bill, Kingston one-man band Mississippi Grover (aka Grog of The Desecrators, Fiends and Orange Alabaster Mushroom) and local combo Life-Size Men. Here's a man whose tonic is sonic.

Life and living

While I was at The Damn Truth show I happened to bump into a familiar face from the early days of the blog: Trevor from The Setbacks. His latest band is Better Living Through Chemistry, which headlined a benefit show for Mustaches For Kids at Pressed last Saturday. Opening things up with some roots-rocking action were Life-Size Men, which also boasts a few familiar faces, including Jeff Tanguay from The Town Cryers and Jeb Bond from Evil Farm Children; here's guitarist R.W. and bassist Kevin!

Better Living Through Chemistry play some emotive alt-rock - a bit like Tragically Hip or Our Lady Peace. Here's singer Luigi preparing for their set!

Oh the humanity!

The show at the Clocktower wasn't just an introduction to Greg Watson's new outfit, it was also the first outing for former Evil Farm Children Janice and Dave's new rock combo, The Mere Humans. Along with Boom Creek vets Ian Vance and Chris MacDonald.

An excellent debut. They also rocked it at the Dominion at the tail end of July opening for White Mystery.

Lost and found

Off to the cozy confines of the Clocktower's basement to see a bunch of familiar faces.I occasionally go through phases of devouring one particular kind of music, and garage rock was one of them. I still love all that 1960s stuff, and Ottawa was once a hotbed for the sound, with folks like Patrick Shanks and Greg Watson involved in several combos weened on the Crypt comps sound. Having already served in The Fiends, The Desecrators and done his own thing with The Orange Alabaster Mushroom and as Mississippi Grover, he brought his Ace Tone organ, a bunch of classic stompers (such as The Haunted's 1-2-5 and How Is The Air Up There?) and some fuzzy originals with his cohorts in The Lost Cause.

Greg sings! That's a blurry Christopher Lyon of Owl Farm in the back.

This was also the first live show for The Mere Humans, a rock'n'roll combo born from Evil Farm Children and Boom Creek (or Four Frames/Mouthpiece, if you can remember that far back). They sound exactly like what you'd expect from that combination, with a tough sounding Motor City vibe, along with a cover of Radio Birdman's Murder City Nights. Here's EFC's Janice and Boom Creeker Ian.

Farm team

The last time I saw Evil Farm Children was at Bluesfest. Not to slight their turn on the River Stage but they're an act I prefer to see up close in a bar (much like every other act I like, come to think of it). This was also their first Ottawa show since November. Anyway, they played a fine set finishing things off at Irene's.

Them Children: Dave, Janice and Jeb.

Dave gets his kicks - most likely on Route 66.

More Jeb.

More Janice!

Marie-Josee Houle takes a guest spin.

Accordion action!

For the big finish Ian Vance and Neil Petersen from Boom Creek came up to sing and play on Creedence Clearwater Revival's Sweet Hitchhiker and The Amboy Dukes' Journey To The Center of Your Mind.

Sometimes the wide angle lens isn't angular enough.

That's all folks!

They'll be back at The Spill April 11 to play havoc with their video games and look for Easter eggs, then play the Elmdale House April 25 along with Marie-Josee and her band. Marie Josee also has an upcoming gig at Zaphod's opening for Couer de Pirate April 12.
