Butter and honey

Back on June 20 I hopped over to Pressed to check out Montreal's Lungbutter. They have a new album out, Honey. They were joined by H. de Heutz and Deathsticks, who started the night off. Deathsticks are also playing Friday at the Side By Side Weekend. Here's Laura!

Swoop and hover

Friday night I headed over to Pressed on Gladstone to hear some My Bloody Valentine-styled noise and high-volume shoegaze from Halifax's Kestrels and one of several bands named Harsh Reality (this was the Montreal one).

The Mnemonics opened; the Twin/Tone-loving folks from the Centretown Recording Alliance are on a slightly different tip then the other acts of the bill, being fonder of The Replacement than, say, Medicine. Here's singing Colin and bending Dave.

In the most Canadian act of charity possible, Larry gave Jon his beer after some accidental spillage.

On to the mighty fuzz of Harsh Reality, which features Joni Sadler (also of Caymans and Lungbutter), Kaity Zozula (also of Lungbutter) Eamon Quinn of Alcrete et al., and Sebastien, of whom I know nothing.

Kestrels finished things off with a brisk set (they had about a half-hour to fill) of songs from their new EP and future record (expected in February). Maybe it's the East Coast connection, but they had me thinking of Eric's Trip.

Black Ought

The entertainment calendar is beginning to thin out as we get closer to Christmas, but if you fancy post-punk or the hardcore side of Ottawa underground music scene in the mid-1990s then Pressed was the place to be last night. Mark from Black Bough Records brought Dark Plains, Lungbutter and Ought together to play a fairly intense show. (Taline Noelle Bedrossian also did some pre-set tape-manipulating, but I arrived too late to hear it.)

First up, Dark Plains. This is yet another Ottawa bass-and-drums duo, and it's interesting to hear how they differ from Big Dick (who come out of Ottawa's punk rock and punk-pop scene) and Thought Project (from the hard rock side of things). Andy Cant and Matt Deline have their roots in Okara and Shotmaker. Andy's also appeared on the blog with the New Autum Line and Les Allumettes. They had their first show this year at Ottawa Explosion. Here's Andy!
