Let's do the Cold Warp again

The headliner for the Pressed gig back on March 7 was Cold Warps. The harmony loving pop-punkers made a big splash when they played the final Gaga Weekend in 2010.

I didn't take many photos because things got awful hectic. They released a cool Tour Demos tape around the time of this show on Bruised Tongue and since then have been doing a spot of touring in spring.

New bruises

Pressed is certainly keeping up a busy entertainment schedule these days. Last night the Bruised Tongue folks had Cold Warps and New Swears in for their tape releases, and tonight it's Crusades and Solids. The place was just about packed, and the crowd was about as rambunctious as you'd expect when the Fun Boy Club House crowd is involved ...

At least this time they kept their pants on. Also, Wolfgang played guitar for this outing.

Things were just as crazy for Cold Warps. I've been big fans since they played at the Gaga Weekend in 2010; they were sounding a bit punkier this time around.

Things got so moshy I finally retreated to the back of the room. Expect more of the same tonight (hopefully with fewer crowd-surfers grabbing the noise-abatement stuff hanging from the ceiling - we really don't want it ended up coming down on someone's head).

Warp speed

It's amazing what a little R&R will do for you - I actually felt vaguely alert for the final round of Gaga Weekend 2010. Perhaps it was the beach-friendly sounds of Cold Warps that perked me up. I'm a big fan of the lo-fi pop of bands like Best Coast, Wavves, Jaill and all those other bands who can't spell, and I'd rank the Halifax quartet right up there with them. They may look like hardcore kids, but inside beats a heart of pure fuzz.

But first, Stephane the Man spins the hits.

And they're off: Dominique Taylor on guitar, Paul Hammond on vocals and Lance Purcell on drums.

Let's do the time warp again

Gaga Weekend is over for another year, and an awesome time was had by all. I want to stress that point because I feel fairly certain that a significant number of people who were there may no longer have actual memories of the event. The night at Babylon was a supercool end to the three-day event, with the only real bummer being The Goodnight Loving being stopped at the border. No matter, all six bands played really wicked sets, starting with Cold Warps.

Cold Warps were so good I bought both their tapes, a T-shirt, and a pair of really overpriced buttons on the spot. They played ace powerpop with a definite Marked Men feel, and have super stage presence as well. Definitely a festival highlight.

The Steve Adamyk Band played a really hot set after being introduced by a shirtless Ian.

They had some of Statues up to sing along to The Modernettes' Barbra.

Montreal's rambunctious Chuck Berry-lovers The Walnut Kids also rocked out in style, and definitely more in tune that their Ritual performance at Bored to Death earlier this year.

I've always been impressed by The Sonic Avenues' live show, but fresh off their U.S. tour they were sharp as never before.

There goes Ian!

As for Statues, the frequent visitors from Sudbury already have tons of fans in this city, which is why the moshing reached a fever pitch during their set. They played a swell version of The Buzzcocks' Lipstick.

Ian told me earlier that he had The Visitors on as a closer because they were totally reliable at rocking the crowd. True, that. Skotty told me earlier that he had a finger's breath left of energy for the performance, and might consider curling up asleep on stage after the set.

I was interviewed by one of Luca's minions during the show and asked how many photos I'd taken; I thought it was somewhere in the 1,500 to 1,800 range. Actually, it turned out to be 1,700, give or take a few duds I deleted immediately. Most of the ones from the last two shows are pretty horrible as my ability to compose a shot deteriorated, but still not a bad document of Ottawa's first and only rock'n'roll festival.
