Time after time

Way back on Sept. 5 I toddled over to the House of Targ for some classic Canadian supergroup action. Ian Blurton (of Change of Heart, C'mon and Public Animal, among others) has a new combo, pseudonymously titled Ian Blurton's Future Now, and it might just be his best one yet. First up, Glenn Milchem (of Holy Fuck and Blue Rodeo) played some solo stuff.

Next up, Espanola. This is the project fronted by Aaron Goldstein, who's best known for being a go-to steel guitarist in Toronto; he's popped up on the blog before as part of Huron (who also backed Ian for his Happy Endings show at Targ) and accompanying Daniel Romano.

Anna Ruddick on bass - she's also in City and Colour and is definitely an ace on her instrument.

Ian Blurton's Future Now absolutely killed it. I dare say this quartet is the four most technically proficient musicians he's assembled (and yes, it is himself, Aaron, Anna and Glenn again). First off, some hand percussion with Glenn!

Hot and hairy

Saturday I once again headed off to the House of Targ - I may have to change the blog name to Weekly Targ Update - to check out Ian Blurton's latest project. In fact, his Happy Endings date back to the solo album of the same name he worked up back in 2009 to kick out some psychedelic jams. He's apparently decided to resurrect that material alongside the men of Huron for a handful of shows - thus the Targ showing.

First up, In Heat, which have undergone a lineup change since I saw them in 2012 at Cafe DeKcuf. Tim Anderson now sits behind the drums, and Lexxi SplitLip rocks the microphone. They sound a bit more 1970s New York hard rock than they did before as a result.

On to Huron. These chaps are pals with the You've Changed crowd (Shotgun Jimmy, etc.) and you might recognize Aaron Goldstein from previous blog appearances playing pedal steel with Daniel Romano. They play in the cosmic country vein.
