Almost equal

The show I went to after All That Is Heavy II was also all about the meta, but rather than the more traditional forms on display, there was a heavy dose of modern prog. Shahman (who I missed) were quite a bit different to my ears than the bands that followed, starting with The Isosceles Project, an instrumental trio from Toronto.

And here they are!

Scott Tessier on fretless bass. I also noted the Circle patch.

They're now taking it easy after a heap o' touring.
  • Show reminder: The Mudplots, The Yips, The Cryptids and Johnny Yuma rock Pressed; The Bruitals, No Fly List and The Cutmen perform at Zaphod's; Kill City, Keturah Johnson, Machine Gun Dolly, The Beer Barons and Blue J rock Mavericks. Salton Sea and Samantha Mouchet are at Irene's; the Elmdale hosts Mehdi Cayenne Club and Louis Philippe Robillard. Jung People play the Avant-Garde.

Don't fret

Last night was an evening of fretless bass. Shahman, Toronto's Isosceles Project and Argus Panoptes were shifted downstairs so a small crowd could get their weirdo rock-death metal fix. I actually arrived too late to see Shahman (whose bass is so fretless they don't have one at all). Isosceles Project was in full swing when I walked in the door.

They barely took a break in their onrushing instrumental prog-metal juggernaut. "We have two songs left... that's about half an hour," said bassist  Scott Tessier.

Let there be headbanging!

Argus Panoptes is made up a bunch of local metal vets; most recently I saw drummer Raphael Weinroth-Brown playing cello for Musk Ox. The band goes for the full on cookie monster death metal assault.
