Five fingers of death

Went to see The Empiricals and The Flaps share a stage (actually the raised audience section to the right of Babylon's stage, the bit that runs in front of the soundman's board). It was a fight to the finish at Babylon as the two bands teamed up and/or faced off at Babylon for the delectation of a couple of dozen fans. One band played a song, then the other. Awesome instrumental music from both. The Empiricals take their cue from Asian soundtracks, while The Flaps have a spacier sound.

On your left ... The Empiricals!

On your right ... The Flaps!

Paul Hogan surfs it up.

John F. Higney Jr. keys it up.

More Empiricals!

Jamie Gullikson of The Flaps.

Alas, most of my photographs didn't work out. That balustrade is not conducive to good picture composition. Anyway, both bands have CDs in the works; The Empiricals will release theirs Sept. 3. The Flaps' will be out in the fall on the Kelp Records label.
