Saturday I went to Pressed for some instrumental action, courtesy of Death Metal Witch and Raphael Weinroth-Browne. There wasn't an empty seat in the house (in fact, several people were sat on the floor in fron of the stage as well) for both excellent sets. Death Metal Witch is the solo project of musician Austin Evans (you can check out the latest witchy action on Bandcamp). Here's Austin starting things off!
Guitar action!
Chatting with the audience action!
Crowded action!
Slightly better-lit action!
Raphael was going to perform as part of Kamancello, his duo with Shahriyar Jamshidi, but that turned out to not be possible, so he turned in a top-notch solo set instead. Here's Raphael!
And so on!
Bowing action!
Crowded action!
Plucking action!
Adjusting action!
A great night.

The bows knows
Thursday night I headed over to Pressed for an evening of stringed music. Cellist Raphael Weinroth-Browne of The Visit and Musk Ox teamed up with kamanche player Shahriyar Jamshidi to make an album of East-meets-West improvised sounds, and brought their terrific chemistry to the Gladstone Ave. cafe to show off in a live setting. Here's Raphael!
And here's Shahriyar!
Improvised action!
And so on!
The view from the back.
Fine stuff.
