Get psyched!

You can add another festival to the list of events filling out the summer schedule. This most worthy addition is the Ottawa Psych Festival, which had its inaugural night at the House of Targ on July 7. It was also something of a Cardinal Fuzz showcase. The first performers of the evening were The Golden Rule, a laidback duo formed by CF founder Dave and Brett from Dead Sea Apes. Here's Dave!

They played a very brief set, then it was time for Mark Alexander McIntyre, of TBWNIAS, Weapons of Mass Seduction, Cold Coffee & Salty Boots, Four'N'Giv'r and so on!

After those two short sets, it was time for TBWNIAS to stretch things out a bit. Here's John shaking things a bit!

Kitchener's Hawkeyes are a band I've been hankering to see for some time - I can recall yapping about them on social media a couple of years ago. They definitely put on a heavyweight show. Here's some guitar action with a very blurry Ryan, Ron, Chris and Patrick!

Just think, a few short months I was living a sad, Shooting Guns-less existence, but now I've managed to see them perform three times since October. Huzzah! They put on a fantastic, only somewhat inebriated set to finish the night off. Here's some bass action with Jay!

Moog and guitar action with (I think) Steve and Zach!

And er, that's it! I'm already looking forward to the next OPF in 2019!

Up above

I took an early-evening stroll over to Birdman Sound last week for some anniversary activity. The Glebe institution is celebrating 25 years of draining my wallet (and also selling music to other people). Victoria transplant and former Band Whose Name Is A Symbol/Cold Coffee and Salty Boots/Four'N'Giv'r/Weapons of Mass Seduction/Solid Senders/Trudels member Mark Alexander McIntyre was back in town for a solo set, and Montreal duo Pachyderm also appeared to pay homage. No worries if you missed it - the whole affair was broadcast live on Steve Kirklands 6 p.m. CKCU show and is available on demand.
