For the cause

The Ottawa Explosion is a month away, but the Explosion crew aren't sitting around waiting for the day to book shows; They served up some fest veterans on Wednesday with a rare live Babylon show, featuring Protomartyr, who made a big splash at their performance a couple of years ago (the only OXW I've missed, so I'm going by eyewitness testimony), as well as soon-to-be festival veterans Baberaham Lincoln and Scattered Clouds. Here's a fuzzy Cory and Hillary! (For those who can't get log enough Lincoln in their lives, the band is also  playing a set at Black Squirrel Books on Tuesday, with Basic Nature.)

The lights were so low for Scattered Clouds that I busted out the flash - I can tell it's been a while because the results were a little mixed ... Here's Jamie and Mike!

This was my first shot at seeing Prottomartyr; I definitely get a The Fall-meets-GVSB vibe from the band. Here's drummer Alex!

Spiralling outward

I was a big fan of Toronto's Spiral Beach back in the day, and I've been just as impressed by the various offshoots (Doldrums and Moon King). Last time I saw Moon King was at Ritual, opening for Holy Fuck. I was quite interested to see how things would go in the somewhat smaller stage at Pressed. Locals Baberaham Lincoln kicked things off. Here's Jenna, Hillary and Cory.

I left my camera plugged in the night before and drained the battery, so I resorted to my iPhone for a few shots.

Still waving

Saturday I went to Gabba Hey to check out an all age show. Things got started a little earlier than I expected them to, so I missed Ottawa's latest musical offering, Weed Mom, but I did catch swell sets from Baberaham Lincoln, Moss Lime and New Fries - quite a varied offering, come to think of it.

Baberaham Lincoln were up first (well, second, really). Here's keyboardist and Simpsons triviameister Cory!

DJ Sadboy (of Gaycation) kept the crowd dancing between sets.

Up next Moss Lime; last time I saw them (at Pressed), Joel Young was playing guitar. I hope that Charlotte joining Helene and Caitlin on stage is a sign that various visa problems have been ironed out. Either way, expect an album out on Telephone Explosion some time this year. Here's some guitar action!

On to the herky jerky sounds of the highly energetic New Fries. The Toronto band used to just be called Fries, but apparently another similarly named band told them to cut it out. Perhaps they should have called themselves No Fries, because their sound is straight out of the NY No Wave scene. Anyway, here's Anni rocking the guitar.

Fine stuff all around, and a very enthusiastic young crowd as well.
