Above average

If I were a rational person, I suppose I might have slept in on Sunday instead of going off to Club SAW for the hangover edition of Ottawa Explosion. As evidence I'm not, here are some snaps of Average Times, who I caught the last few minutes of. It was their first show.

Todd frets!

Drummer Stef, Tim (from Year Zero, etc.) and Curtis, a.k.a. Stabatron of Hellbros.

Stef hits!

And, er, that's it. Fortunately I managed to catch a bit more of them in August at the Atomic Rooster.

Bodies in the basement

The next act down in the dungeon was Savage Crimes, a band that bears a striking resemblance in terms of lineup to Nervous System. Jess and Matt are going to have to start marketing themselves as a hired gun rhythm section to local musicians. In this case they're doing time with former Sweet Jane and current Savage Criminal in chief Todd.

That Todd!

That Matt!

That Jesse in a little too much closeup. He was also a Sweet Jane for a while there.

The whole lot!

"Yodel-eh-hee-hoo!" There was no actual yodelling.

Jesse can play bass and reach for a beer at the same time.

Big finish!

As mentioned yesterday, they're doing a show at Kaffe 1870 in Wakefield with Suppositories, Holy Cobras and Zebrassieres.

Running the asylum

Day 2 of the Gaga Weekend was held in the basement of 854 Bronson Ave. - at least that way Matt Cosgrove knows he's going to get into the show ... well he was also playing drums in two bands so I guess that helps. This time around there was even a direct video feed from the basement to the living room so folks could watch the insanity downstairs from the safety of the couch.

He Who Shall Not Be Named introduces Nervous System - Matt Cosgrove makes his first appearance of the evening, while the Going Gaga banner made by Allie makes an encore from the previous night.

The Holy Cobras were up next to do some throbbing of their own and also hand out free Kool-Aid. I always get a little nervous when people start donning waterproof gear ... sure enough there was some splashing. Kristal and Davey provide the Cobras new rhythm section ... they switched at the end, leading some to say Kristal should be the new drummer and Davey the new bassist.

Stephane the Man of CHUO's Up for a Downslide was on hand to spin some tunes ...

Stephane the Man, 854 Bronson Ave, June 12, 2009

.... as was DJ Scott, just behind a band of bevies, including some ladies you'll be seeing on stage with The White Wires, Felines and Suppositories if you take in any Gaga action today and tonight.

Allie Hanlon and Co., 854 Bronson Ave, June 12, 2009

Up next, the Savage Crimes blitzed through a quick set of nasty punk and gibberish. I was close enough that Todd was poking me with his guitar headstock. He also turned the microphone over to me so I could utter some gibberish of my own. I couldn't think of anything to say so I just bugged Nigel of The Girlfriends' about his brother whacking me on the knee with his guitar last time I was in Cozzie's basement for a show.

Uranium Comeback don't play all that often, but offer up a white hot platter of power-pop-punk, including a cover of The Pointed Sticks' What Do You Want Me To Do?

Uranium Comeback, 854 Bronson Ave, June 12, 2009

There was so much singalong action for Walking You Home they performed it twice.

The Beach Blankets finished things off with their crazy party rock, audience wrestling, and an emergency use of a ho dog bun as a microphone.

Beach Blankets, 854 Bronson Ave, June 12, 2009

Plenty of singalong action here too! Part way through the set the TV watchers upstairs were cut off by a pulled wire. "Is everyone alive down there?" Cosgrove asked when I made my way upstairs. "I think so ...."

It all ended with a teenage dance party.

Dancing, 854 Bronson Ave, June 12, 2009

More bands - too many to mention or type in at 3:30 in the morning - perform at Yogi's place near Greenfield and Main, while The Creeps, Statues, Sonic Avenues, Tokyo Sex Whale and Million Dollar Marxists rock Babylon in the evening.

The young savages

Savage Crimes are one of the offshoots of the demise of The Sweet Janes. While one chunk of Ottawa's titans of teen trash went off to become The Holy Cobras, two turned to a life of crime.

Ex-Sweet Jane Todd.

Other ex-Sweet Jane Jesse Winchester.

Not-so-Sweet Matt Cosgrove.

Savage action!

The whole lot!

Big finish!

What next, I know not.

Lovers, Venetians and thieves

Tuesday was a day for quick hits. When yesterday's prophesied thunderstorm turned into a brief shower I pedalled down to Bluesfest to see Born Ruffians, and incidentally catch a few songs from Most Serene Republic and Jason Collett. As was observed in a conversation later in the day, it was almost Zaphod's day at the festival. I know I saw two of the outfits first at Zaphod Beeblebrox and Collett played there in April. All of them attracted considerable crowds.

I like Collett's music, but on occasions I think I detect flashes of smugness that impede my enjoyment of his live show.

From the River Stage I went to the Black Sheep Stage to catch Born Ruffians. They're sounding less ruffian by the moment. As I've said before: Jonathan Richman, Wire, Talking Heads ... but more Richman this time around.

Then I headed home, stopping at the River Stage again to listen briefly to Most Serene Republic. I'm not sure why bands who know they'll be playing an outdoor festival think it's a good idea for everyone to wear black. Good thing for them it was cloudy.

In a couple of hours I was better fed and at the Dominion Tavern to see Memphis rockers Lover! and local combos Savage Crimes and Mother's Children.

Savage Crimes are born out of the part of the Sweet Janes that didn't go on to the Holy Cobras, plus Matt Cosgrove, who has also served as a timekeeper for local folkie Gianna Lauren. They're more on the punk rock side of the garage.

Savage Crimes, The Dominion Tavern, July 8, 2008

Next up were Mother's Children, a half-and-half split between former Sick Fits and former Million Dollar Marxists. This was their second show.

Mother's Children, The Dominion Tavern, July 8, 2008

Lover! finished the evening off with some chunky Memphis rock. Main man Rich Crook has performed with well known groups like The Lost Sounds and Reatards, and also done time in the Knaughty Knights with former Oblivian Jack Yarber. His band has some Black and Whites in it I hear. They whipped it out hard and fast and sounded great.

Lover! The Dominion Tavern, July 8, 2008

This show also had an excellent turnout for a sticky Tuesday evening.
