I headed over to House of Targ several days ago (before a computer on the fritz stopped me from updating the blog) to check out a bunch of unfamiliar Ottawa bands and some touring Sudburians. The Amazing Rhombus was the big name on the posters, but Average Times (with which I'm quite familiar) finished the evening off. The openers were Blue Hills (or as they put it, Blve Hills), a quartet of young men with a severe allergy to shirts. That's mainman Cody Parnell at right; Brydon, Tommy and Dana round out the combo, which sounded pretty jammy (they describe themselves as "surfadelic").
Bass action with Dana!
Percussive action!
More guitar with Brydon!
Cody sings!
Rhythm section action!
Tongue action!
And so on!
Tweaking action!
Extra Tommy!
Blue blve action!
And finally a bit of lying down.
Elementals also made a good impression with their early-Radiohead to Nirvana sound. Here's bassist Rick!
Cody sings!
Rhythm section action!
Extra Cody!
Rick sings!
Jamie hits!
The Almighty Rhombus sounded really good; I'd recommend them to anyone with a fondness for Nada Surf (and heartfelt pop in general). Here's some guitar action with Michael!
Rhythm section action with Carter and Laura!
More guitar with Keegan!
More Carter!
Piano action with Clayton! He was a lot more active than the photos suggest - he was moving around quite a bit on a dark spot on the stage.
Even more Carter!
Michael sings!
Extra Clayton!
It feels like a long time since I've seen Average Times live (actually only half a year or so), and they rocked as usual. Here's some rhythm section action with Steph and Seiji!
Guitar action with Tod!
More Seiji and Tod!
More Steph!
Singalong action!
Todd sings!
And that's it, largely because most of my pictures ended up with the focus being the Almighty Rhombus's backdrop.
