A Sunday or two ago I headed off to Black Squirrel Books for an evening of twee and bedroom pop sounds. A couple of bands were coming up from the U.S. (although only Philadelphia's Free Cake For Every Creature actually managed the border crossing - Diet Cig couldn't make it), Lonely Parade zipped over from Peterborough, musical centre of the universe, and Ottawa's own Heavy Bedroom held down the middle. First up, the wonderfully named Free Cake For Every Creature, a band so twee they make Belle & Sebastien sound like Slayer. The band was started by singer Katie, who recruited another trio of musicians to form a full band. Here's Evan, of Albany's Russel The Leaf.
Vocal action with Katie!
Bass action with Heyoon!
Percussive action with Fran!
More Katie!
More Evan and Heyoon!
Evan sings!
On to Heavy Bedroom, the solo project of Alex from Bondar; like FCFEC, it's also expanded its membership from early blog appearances. Here's Alex!
More adjusting action!
Alex sings!
Bass action with Thean of Bosveld!
Percussive action with Baberaham Lincoln's Hilary!
Bookish action!
More drumming!
Lonely Parade put on a swell show at Pressed in March, and were just as fine at this September gig. Here's Anwyn!
Charlotte sings!
Guitar action with Augusta!
More Charlotte!
Anwyn hits!
Even more Augusta!
Big finish!
A very pleasant night of music.
