Improvising Musicians of Ottawa/Outaouais have been doing their thing for several years now, and often I've looked at a show listing and told myself "I really should get out to see that ...." Well, I finally got off my duff on Thursday to check out two sets from New York's Brahja Waldman at Black Squirrel Books. The quintet is composed of the eponymous Brahja Waldman on saxophone, keyboardist Shadrach Hankoff, stand-up bassist Martin Heslop, drummer Daniel Gelinas and tenor saxman Adam Kinner most of the time; the lineup was a bit different in Ottawa (Isis Giraldo subbed on synths, Kinner was elsewhere), but the same spacey sounds as on their latest release, Wisdomatic. Here's Hankoff, the only well-lit member of the troupe.
The man himself.
Rhythm section action with Daniel and Martin!
Devin wanders among the stacks.
More Martin!
Extra Shadrach!
More Daniel!
Isis sings!
The whole lot!
And so on!
And finally Daniel tries to stop his bass drum from escaping with a little light reading.
A very pleasant evening.
