Thursday I went over to the House of Targ for a mixed bill of funk, folk and alt rock. The headliners were local folkies, Dirty Sheep, and the openers were Animal Confession, a trio solidly on the wavelength of the heavier strains of 1990s alt-rock. I haven't seen either band before. I haven't seen The Ven Dreddies either (who have been doing their thing for a bit more than a year now), but I've seen Ty, Jim and Ike in various permutations of Pretty Little Death Machine, Gnarly Brown, Thought Project, Boom Creek and (for all three) F, among other outfits.
Animal Confession was formed by guitarist Andrew Gharib.
Patrick Quesnel handles the bass.
And on drums, Trevor Grey.
Rhythm section action! The band cops to a Deftones and Tool influence.
Running about!
Andrew sings!
More Patrick!
Trevor sings!
The whole lot!
On to The Ven Dreddies; the members are all in other bands, so this is apparently their chance to get their funk on. Here's Jim!
Ike hits!
Tyler rocks the feather boa.
Lambchop sits in.
More guitar!
Ty sings!
Jim sings!
Extra Ike!
Jim supports change (and the occasional guitar pick).
The Dirty Sheep finished the evening off with selections from their reasonably new album (from last year) and a select cover or two. Here's Deborah Landry and Allain Lalonde.
Over on keys, Chris McGuire.
Mandolin action!
Guitar action!
D'arcy McGuire, brother of Chris, on drums.
Deborah sings!
Allain sings!
A nicely varied lineup.
